NewsLucas Leiva visits United Nations HQ with LFC and The Red Way
Lucas Leiva joined Liverpool FC at the United Nations headquarters in the USA on Friday, as part of the club’s involvement in New York Climate Week, showcasing its award-winning sustainability programme The Red Way.
Former Reds player Lucas took part in a panel discussion alongside LFC’s director of impact, Rishi Jain, where they were joined by former Premier League star Shaka Hislop and ex-professional women’s international Eni Aluko, to discuss football’s power to shape a more sustainable, healthy and inclusive world.
The pair shared their perspective on the role players and clubs can play in driving global change while sharing the message of LFC’s commitment to all 17 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
They also met with UN under-secretary-general Chaloka Beyani to discuss the club’s work and future opportunities to help make impactful change, with a particular focus on the role it continues to play in eradicating hate speech and discrimination from sport and society.
The visit concluded LFC’s schedule in New York City following a number of key engagements throughout the week.
Lucas also joined Jasmyne Spencer at the GOAL Medals Ceremony for a fireside chat to discuss how athletes can drive change, before appearing alongside Rick Fox and Linnae Harper for Adapt2Win’s ‘Climate Action is Not a Spectator Sport’ panel.
Jain explored how sport, culture and entertainment can mobilise communities, joining a Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team roundtable at GOALS House and discussing carbon removal opportunities in sport alongside 1PointFive, such as LFC’s commemorative Istanbul jersey and two newly launched plushes.
He also spoke on the business of sport in a changing climate alongside representatives from CAA Sports, the NBA and WMO at The Nest Campus.
Together, Lucas and Jain also joined Karen Sack, executive director of ORRAA, at the Nature Hub and Wave Collective events to share the news of LFC’s new collaboration supporting SDG 14: Life Below Water.
This was LFC’s third consecutive year at New York Climate Week, underlining the club’s leadership in sustainability and its commitment to creating a lasting positive impact for its people, planet and communities.
