Liverpool FC Women's victory over Chelsea has been chosen as the League Managers Association's Performance of the Week.

The award is selected by a panel that comprises chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Chris Hughton, Rachel Yankey, Les Ferdinand, Clare Tomlinson, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry.

The panel determined the award should go to the Reds for the 2-1 win against reigning champions Chelsea in their Barclays Women’s Super League opener at Prenton Park last Sunday, which was played in front of a record crowd of 3,006.

Katie Stengel was Liverpool’s match-winner on the afternoon, converting two second-half penalties – the second of which she gained herself – as the hosts came from a goal behind.

Reds manager Matt Beard received the Performance of the Week trophy at The Campus training ground on Friday morning.

“We’re absolutely delighted to receive the award and thank the panel for choosing us,” said Beard. “It’s a cliché of course but absolutely true that I’m picking it up on behalf of the whole coaching staff and the players, whose hard work made it possible.

“Now we’ve got a big game at Anfield on Sunday and we need to try to produce another very strong performance.”
