NewsLFC Women team news: Roman Haug, Trueman and squad options
Gareth Taylor reported no fresh injury concerns for his Liverpool FC Women squad ahead of matchday two.
Maizie Trueman and Sophie Roman Haug are also nearing a return to action to further bolster the options for the head coach.
Four-nil winners at Charlton Athletic to start the Barclays Women’s Super League season last weekend, the Reds next host Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference today, Taylor said: “Yeah, pretty much everyone came through OK.
“A few little niggles here and there. I think it was the first time we had a few players that have played 90 minutes. That was good.
“We always looked previously in the pre-season to get as many 90 minutes under our belts as possible, but I felt like we got some really good volume in training, so not necessarily gaining that but we got volume in training and used the games in a way where we could build up to that 90 minutes. So, it was good.
“Fortunately, we were in a good position to be able to look after key players who probably use more energy in 60 minutes than other players would.
“All good. And then on top of that, Maizie Trueman will be back closer to the squad this weekend and also Roman Haug.”
He added: “We’ve got Mari Ward, who hopefully will be back on the training pitch soon.
“She has had a couple of niggling ones that are not super-serious but have just restricted her and her involvement in the team.
“And the same with Lucy Parry.
“It will be better when we get those guys back, the options then in that area of the pitch will help us a lot more.
“But you have to pay big credit to Sam Kerr, who played at right-back at the weekend and has done a super job, has played there in the pre-season. What I love is her openness to adapt and help the team.
“There’s good competition for places, particularly in the midfield areas. When we get Mao Itamura back and when Zara [Shaw] returns from the World Cup also, that’s going to strengthen us a little bit more.
“But you understand in the course of a season that at the moment, Mari and Lucy Parry are not available; in a month’s time they’ll be back and it’ll be someone else.
“So you just have to try to adapt and evolve as much as you possibly can in a squad, because you’re never going to cover everything that you really want.”
