Liverpool FC Women lifted the FA Women's Championship trophy in style on Sunday afternoon thanks to a 6-1 victory over Sheffield United Women at Prenton Park.

The Reds secured the title and promotion back to the Women’s Super League in early April ahead of the recent international break.

Matt Beard’s side, though, were finally handed the chance to lift the trophy in front of their own supporters post-match in the club’s final home game of the campaign.

Liverpool raced into a two-goal lead after 14 minutes in front of a record attendance thanks to efforts from Katie Stengel and Leanne Kiernan.

Stengel first cleverly dinked over onrushing Blades goalkeeper Frances Kitching, having latched onto a pass through the defence from Melissa Lawley.

The midfielder then provided again as she raced down the right to cross low for Kiernan to finish off another decisive break.

The visitors forced Rachael Laws into her first meaningful action a short while later, though the Reds stopper saved well from a Kasia Lipka shot inside the box.

Ahead of the half-time interval, Missy Bo Kearns almost added a third but her driven effort was beaten away from goal.

Liverpool, however, didn’t have to wait long to add to the scoreline after the change of ends.

Lawley bagged a goal to go alongside her two assists, finishing inside the six-yard box from a Kiernan delivery as roles were reversed from earlier.

The Reds were enjoying full control and added a fourth after the hour.

Yana Daniels whipped in a cross from the right-hand side and Stengel was again on hand to volley home her second of the afternoon.

The American went in search of a hat-trick on the next attack but saw a rising shot from the edge of the box fly over the bar.

With 12 minutes remaining, Sheffield United cut the deficit thanks to an Ellie Wilson header from a Maddy Cusack free-kick.

The Reds restored their four-goal advantage, though, five minutes later as Kearns found the top corner of the net.

Liverpool struck the bar in the build-up before Stengel calmly laid off the ball for the No.7 to curl a shot home past the diving Kitching.

The goalscoring was finally completed late on by Jasmine Matthews, with the defender guiding a header home from close range at the second phase of a corner.
