Interview'It's really intense' - Calvin Ramsay on USA pre-season, loan experience and more

The 23-year-old full-back is making best use of his time in the USA with Liverpool as preparations for the 2026-27 campaign continue at pace.

The Reds have undertaken a training camp in Chicago in recent weeks, which will conclude with a third and final friendly fixture against Leeds United at Solider Field today (9pm BST kick-off).

Ramsay enjoyed minutes in each of the opening two matches of the tour, versus Sunderland in Nashville and Wrexham in New York.

Ahead of the meeting with Leeds, Ramsay spoke to Liverpoolfc.com to discuss the fortnight Stateside, his aims, and the experience he has gained in recent seasons on loan.

On the training camp in Chicago...

It's been good. It's been a good experience, and I've really enjoyed it training with some top players.

On the group being a mix of senior and young players...

It's been good. I've played with quite a few of the young players in the U21s and things like that over the last couple of years, so I know them quite well. They're obviously all top players and some of them have been out on loan and had really good loans and gained first-team experience. They've settled in well and they've trained well.

On what he's learned from being out on loan himself...

I didn't play as much as I would've liked to play, but it's all learning and the games that I did play, it was a good experience to be involved in men's football and things like that. Also, when you are involved here it helps, because obviously it's a tough place to be when you're training with world-class players, you need a little bit of experience, and when you've been out on loan it kind of gives you that.

On the benefits of having the loan experience...

It's the crowds, the stadiums and things like that. There's been some good crowds here, so you get a bit of that when you're out on loan. It's just men's football. It's a lot tougher than U21s football, I think. It's all valuable experience.

On how it's been working with the new coaching staff...

I've enjoyed it. It's really intense and he wants us constantly pressing and being aggressive and being able to defend and attack. It's been good – I’ve enjoyed it. It's obviously only been a few weeks so hopefully I can stay here for a little bit longer and keep working with him and keep learning and get better.

On picking up minutes in pre-season...

It's been nice. That's obviously the plan when you come here. You want to play minutes and try to do as well as you can. I got an assist in the first game [against Sunderland], which was nice, and then I played quite a bit in the other game [against Wrexham] as well, which was good. Then the last game [against Leeds], hopefully I get some more.
