NewsGareth Taylor reaction: LFC Women's Merseyside derby win and why his players are 'a coach's dream'

Sunday’s Barclays Women’s Super League match was bookended by goals from Beata Olsson and Cornelia Kapocs to ensure an impressive performance was rewarded with three points.

The victory represents the Reds’ first in the WSL against the Blues at Anfield and continues their positive start to the season.

On whether it felt like his side had control of the game 'from start to finish'…

I don’t know about 'start to finish' but certainly I thought we were good. We were good value in the first half. We changed a couple of things at half-time and then Everton changed so we had to change back to what was getting us success. I felt in the second period we didn’t get to grips with the movement of Everton as well as we did in the first half, certainly in our pressing, therefore we didn’t necessarily lose opportunities for them to attack our goal but certainly territory. But still we created a lot of opportunities – I think Natalia [Ramos] could have had four goals today, certainly a hat-trick!

Fantastic for the girls because they really deserved that, the confidence that goes with winning a derby [and] we get rid of the so-called ‘Anfield hoodoo’ against Everton. But I’m just really proud of the performance and the way that the players stuck at it – and we needed the supporters today, I thought the supporters were fantastic.

On Olsson’s opener being the fastest Merseyside derby goal in the WSL and how pleased he was with his team's strong start…

Yes, we did [start strongly]. It obviously settles because this is new to us and new to a lot of the girls, there’s a few girls today playing for the first time at Anfield: Natalia, Khiara [Keating], even though she's been here it’s the first time she’s started a game. So, rightly so, there’s going to be some anxiety and Beata settled us and like I say, we did some good things.

I thought Jenna Clark was really, really solid, Sam Kerr as well. I thought there were a lot good performances and when we needed to make the changes, it’s difficult, but they were also changes that helped us. I think Alice [Bergstrom] had a big part in the second goal.

On Liverpool’s ability to create plenty of chances and the intensity of their play being a source of satisfaction, with the final scoreline possibly not fully reflective of their dominance…

It could have been [more] and Merseyside derbies, really you are never going to run away with them, it’s freakish if you do. We felt that last season the result we had here was harsh on us. I think if you look at their expected goals in that game it was really, really low [but] everything they hit went in.

I’m really pleased today because there are moments of the game when you’re 1-0 up where probably that anxiety I talked about comes in a little bit again. But I feel with the players, they trust the process. We keep working in the way we do, we train it every single day and now we’re starting to see the rewards which is really promising.

On how happy he is with his players during an impressive start to the season…

I think regardless of the success or the decent start that we’ve had, I just I can’t speak highly enough of these players. They are brilliant to work with, they really are. I mean like a coach’s dream because they just are really hungry to learn and improve and they’re very honest. They reset really quickly over a little bit of failure and yeah, I think it’s just nice when things go your way. We play in a manner that we want to win games and you can’t always do that, but we managed to do it today so we’re really pleased.
