NewsGareth Taylor column: Busy schedule, potential rotation and an Anfield derby to relish
In his latest column, head coach Gareth Taylor previews the busy schedule ahead for Liverpool FC Women, which features Sunday's Merseyside derby at Anfield.
It was frustrating to lose so late on against Manchester City last Friday night. It was a challenging game but I thought we gave a lot.
We went toe-to-toe with them for a long period of the game and I was really frustrated just to come up a little bit short and concede in the 90th minute.
I don’t think the players got what they deserved because for large parts of that game we were as good as them.
The thing to work on for us is to really make the most of our moments of play that we had, and turn the opportunities we had into goals.
But there is lots to build on and I feel it has been a positive start to the season.
We now go into a busy period of Subway Players Cup and Barclays Women’s Super League games, starting with Sunderland at St Helens Stadium on Wednesday night (kick-off 7pm BST).
It is then a quick turnaround to the derby against Everton at Anfield on Sunday, followed by Birmingham City and Manchester United away next week.
We need to try to be as open with the squad as we possibly can be, in the sense of potentially making some changes and keeping players fresh. This gives a good opportunity for other players to step up and make their claim.
On Sunday we are back at Anfield, which is always a special place to play, when we host Everton.
We are looking forward to the derby. We know the supporters will be with us as always and I think they have been fantastic again this season.
We are looking to give them that first Anfield win against our neighbours. We beat them at Goodison Park last season and up to when Fisky [Grace Fisk] was sent off we were exceptional.
The key factor for me in a derby is getting control of the game early on and hopefully we can do that.
