ReactionFlorian Wirtz: It's very frustrating - we had enough chances to decide the game
"We have to be better in front of the goal," stressed Florian Wirtz after Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley at Anfield on Saturday.
The Reds responded well to Dominik Szoboszlai missing a penalty by taking a deserved 1-0 lead into half-time, courtesy of a powerful Wirtz strike in the 42nd minute.
But Scott Parker's visitors capitalised on several let-offs to secure a point, with Marcus Edwards thrashing the equaliser past Alisson Becker midway through the second period.
Read on for Wirtz's reaction to the Premier League contest.
On how 'frustrating' the result is...
Yeah, very frustrating. I think, as you said, we had a lot of chances – enough chances to decide the game early. We missed that today. So, very disappointing.
On the decision-making in the final third...
A few times maybe we could decide a little bit better. But we were also – with Hugo [Ekitike]'s goal, which was offside, I think – a little bit unlucky in a few moments. But we have to be better in front of the goal. I think there weren't so many big, big chances but in the end we scored one goal and that was not enough today.
On whether Liverpool 'felt anxiety in front of goal as the game progressed'...
No, I felt that we were really good in the game from the first half on – we played a good game. I think even when they scored the equaliser, we were still the better team, had the better chances. It just didn't want to go in again. It's so disappointing.
On his current form...
I think I'm feeling good on the pitch. Also the connections with the teammates are really good now – we understand each other better on the pitch and I feel this. It gives me more confidence and makes [it] more fun to play.
On what Liverpool can take from the game...
Nothing – it feels like a defeat. When we had so many shots and so many on target, I think we had to score more goals. But some days are like this – you try everything but in the end it doesn't go in the goal. We only take one point but I can only say [in] the next game we go again and try to do better.
