Van Dijk reaction

"They are a very good side, you have to give them credit," the double goalscorer told Liverpoolfc.com at Anfield.

"They played well, brave and tried to get out of our press and at times it worked. So you have to give them credit. But we wanted the three points and got them.

"We have to show character, we have to fight. It was not an easy game, especially at the end. We had to dig deep and we did."

The final stats from a nail-biting day in L4...

Full Time

Liverpool 2-1 Brighton

Game over at Anfield and the Reds have got the job done.

It became a challenging afternoon after a Van Dijk double in the first half opened up a lead, with Alisson's sending-off followed immediately by a Dunk goal.

But Klopp's men held out and are now 11 points clear at the Premier League summit.

90

Four minutes added on.

87

Mooy threatens as he shuffles into shooting space at the edge of the Reds box and fires a shot that Adrian palms away. Liverpool counter through Mane and buy some time in the Brighton half.

Into the final two minutes of normal time and it's still 2-1.

79

Goal

Goal for Brighton

Liverpool are frustrated as from the free-kick, Dunk takes it quickly as Adrian lines up his wall and passes the ball into the open side of the net.

78

Substitution

So on comes Adrian, with Oxlade-Chamberlain taken off.

76

Red Card

Alisson has been sent off.

Brighton substitute Trossard gets to a ball over the top first and his prod at goal is handled by the Liverpool goalkeeper outside his area, prompting a red card from the referee.

75

Substitution

Another Liverpool change - Origi on for Firmino.

And Brighton's final switch sees Maupay replace Connolly.

68

Substitution

And here's Lallana, replacing Salah.

Brighton make a double switch - Trossard and Alzate replace Bissouma and Montoya.

67

Liverpool are preparing Adam Lallana as a substitute.

66

And now Wijnaldum has the time and space in the left channel to pick out a teammate in the area, but Mane can only poke his cross harmlessly into Ryan's hands.

65

Chance

Robertson wins the ball back deep in Brighton territory with some superb pressing and his pull-back from the left flank comes out to Oxlade-Chamberlain. The midfielder sets himself with a touch and strikes - but it's deflected wide.

62

Right on cue... half a chance for Connolly, who collects Montoya's pass into the box and fires a low shot on the turn that Alisson gets down comfortably to hold.

61

Past the hour mark at Anfield and it has been a quarter-hour without real incident since the action resumed. Brighton continue to probe for a way back into the game but Liverpool remain two to the good.

54

Chance

Dunk gets to a near-post corner from the left first and glances a header in search of the bottom corner but guides the ball wide. Close again for Brighton.

50

Slow beginning to this second half until Alexander-Arnold takes a more direct approach with a swerving pass over the Brighton backline towards Salah that Dunk stretches to divert. Unlucky.

46

Kick-Off

The Reds get us back under way...

Half-time

The stats from the first 45 minutes at Anfield...

Half Time

Liverpool 2-0 Brighton

The Reds are two up at the interval at Anfield thanks to two Van Dijk headers at the Anfield Road End, both set up by Alexander-Arnold set-pieces.

45

Almost a brilliant Liverpool goal as Mane carries the ball from his own half, showing strength and balance under pressure, before the ball is moved from Firmino to Salah to Oxlade-Chamberlain, whose effort is taken by Ryan.

40

Brighton are enjoying a really good spell now and Propper has another chance to go for goal, this from a central position 20 yards out, and it's blocked away.

37

Chance

And a big one for the visitors to respond.

Dunk is unmarked in the box to take Burn's bouncing cross from the left but scuffs his attempt to side-foot past Alisson and the ball skews wide.

A let-off for the Reds.

36

A slick move by Brighton gets Propper turned and running into a dangerous position from the left - he tries his luck with a swipe across goal that Alisson does enough to tip away.

32

Stat

Liverpool have now scored 29 headed goals in the Premier League since the start of last season - 10 more than any other team.

24

Goal

GOALLLLL!!!! VAN DIJK!!!!

The big man strikes again!

This time, Alexander-Arnold picks out his fellow defender from a corner on the left and it's another unerring header from the No.4 to give Liverpool a cushion.

Boom.

23

Stat

Since the start of last season, no defender has scored more Premier League goals than Van Dijk's six.

21

Could have been an immediate second for Liverpool, but for Ryan.

First, Mane picks out Firmino with a cute pass across the box and the Brazilian's effort is palmed away from the left post.

Then, Oxlade-Chamberlain's smack from 20 yards is deflected straight to Mane and the Brighton stopper gets his body in the way to deny him.

18

Goal

GOALLLLL!!!!!! VAN DIJK!!!

Liverpool take the lead and it's a beauty.

Alexander-Arnold curls in a cross from the right channel and Van Dijk gets up with a lovely header up and over the reach of Ryan to put the Reds in front.

16

Chance!

Robertson releases Mane down the left wing to stretch his legs and the No.10 threads a pass into the middle for Firmino, whose driven strike is pushed out by Ryan in the Brighton goal.

12

Sight of goal for Salah as he collects Van Dijk's raking pass to the right and completes a one-two with Firmino before moving into a shooting position. It's a narrowing angle, though, and he knocks the ball wide of the near post.

11

Good defending from Lovren to deny Connolly after a Brighton clearance opened up the chance for a one-on-one. The Liverpool man is eventually fouled and the Reds can start again.

4

Bright start to the game here and after Oxlade-Chamberlain sees a low shot blocked at one end, Brighton quickly counter and Van Dijk has to snuff out the danger at the expense of a corner.

2

Oxlade-Chamberlain finds space to the right edge of the Brighton area and lifts in a cross that is cleared before it can reach Firmino - and Robertson sends the loose ball too high with his strike.

Hendo's notes

The captain focuses on Liverpool's clean-sheet record in his matchday programme column, and specifically the need to improve it.

"We know it's an area for improvement and whether we win, lose or draw, we always look at what we could have done better. Why? So we can improve as best we can," writes Henderson.

"The good thing is this isn't a bad situation, anything but. We've got ourselves into a really strong position through some brilliant results but, like any top side, we're constantly on the lookout for any tweaks that will bring improvement, individually, collectively or both.

"That we're doing this from a position of strength speaks volumes for the desire and professionalism of this squad. We want to be as hard to beat as possible and we want to get back to keeping clean sheets."

Team news

Here's what we know already before the line-ups are revealed at 2pm GMT...

Confirmation came through yesterday that Fabinho will be sidelined until the New Year due to the ankle ligament damage he sustained against Napoli in midweek.

However, Naby Keita is now fit again following illness that forced him out of Champions League action on Wednesday.

Klopp is awaiting the results of Joel Matip’s latest scan on his knee injury, while Nathaniel Clyne also remains sidelined.

Brighton welcome defender Lewis Dunk back after he served a one-match suspension last weekend.

The visitors are also boosted by the return of striker Aaron Connolly, who has been in training ahead of the trip to Anfield after a recent groin injury.

Seagulls boss Graham Potter revealed Solly March is a doubt for the game due to a groin issue, however, and Bernardo is not yet available.

'Let's grasp it'

The boss views Liverpool's intense run of games as an 'opportunity' as they close November out before entering a December that brings nine games.

Klopp writes in his column in the official matchday programme: "As a team we must be the embodiment of intensity in our approach. And if we do that I am 100 per cent certain our amazing supporters will be there with us – the wind at our back.

"We can make Anfield as special and inspirational as any game since I have been here if we want to do this.

"We have to play our part, but I think if there was a game where energy from the Anfield crowd would be good, I'd identify this one.

"We are really 'in it' now, in terms of the intense run of games. We don't see this as a burden but as an opportunity.

"So let's grasp it – make it special – and enjoy being back in our home together for a football match to remember."
