Everton v Liverpool: Live matchday blog

The 233rd Merseyside derby ended goalless for a second successive season at Goodison Park, with Liverpool unable to turn their dominance into goals.

Jürgen Klopp's verdict

The manager discussed Liverpool's goalless draw with Everton at Goodison Park and its impact upon the Reds' title ambitions in his post-match press conference.

Click here to read what Klopp had to say.

JK: “We just have to keep going, that’s what we will do. For today, I’ve felt worse after a draw actually because I’ve learned to respect results.”

JK: “It’s a point, let’s carry on. We have to play a lot of games and the only way you can win something is to stay calm but lively… and believe in your chance.”

Jürgen Klopp has arrived for his post-match press conference.

“The good thing is we are in the fight, that’s really good news. My feeling is more and more that we are really prepared for it.”

Jürgen Klopp: "We have to take the sitauton as it is. We talk about a free-flowing Liverpool side the other day and next we have Burnley at Anfield. Only 400 yards away from here but a completely different game. We have to show stability and fight for the result."

Jordan Henderson, also speaking to Sky Sports: "We are disappointed because we wanted to come here and get three points, but we knew it would be tough and frantic. I felt we created enough chances to win. We defended well but we are disappointed because we want to win every game. We just need to be a bit more clinical."

Virgil van Dijk, speaking to Sky Sports: "Of course [we are disappointed]. We deserved the three points and it says a lot that they are celebrating. We had chances to win the game and did not finish them off. We go again. It is time to recover and be ready for the next game. We focus on our next game, everyone wants to be top of the league and we cannot change the situation at the moment."

Klopp on team selection

The boss has been speaking to Sky Sports about why Henderson has been brought in to the starting XI and Firmino is on the bench.

"Millie just felt a little bit his hamstring. If Millie gives a warning sign… I think he would have been fine but the last two days he felt it still. So there is no reason for risk, especially when we have options on the bench, which we had in the last game. Hendo is a very, very important player for us, so it's good he can be back.

"Bobby trained yesterday and it looked really good, so he is on the bench because he could be an option. I didn't think it was necessary to bring him immediately after the good game we played on Wednesday. We'll try it like this. We have very good options, that's important."

Jagielka: We know what it means

Everton skipper Phil Jagielka firmly believes nothing that's gone before - either this season, or in Merseyside derby history - will have an impact on what unfolds this afternoon.

He wrote in the official matchday programme: "On derby day past history counts for nothing. It's all about standing up to be counted and knowing exactly what this game means to the supporters - and not just the 40,000 inside Goodison but every Evertonian around the world watching and listening."

Silva: A special game

Everton boss Marco Silva is calling on the hosts to repeat their performance at Anfield earlier in the season in today's return meeting.

"We all know how this is a special game with its own tradition and unique significance," he writes in his matchday programme notes.

"It is important to us as a team and it is important to our fans. A good result to give our fans a good feeling is what we have been working hard over the past several days to achieve since our game on Tuesday evening in Cardiff.

"When we played at Anfield three months ago we showed our quality, bravery and ambition. We showed what we are as a team with a level of performance that meant we deserved more than what we came away with. We hope for a very good game again today with the same level of commitment and performance."

A goal away from history

Mohamed Salah is one goal away from scoring 50 in the Premier League in fewer games than any other player in Liverpool history. This will be his 65th match and the record is currently held by Fernando Torres (72 games).

The Premier League record for reaching 50 in the fewest games for a single club is 66 matches, held by Alan Shearer while he was with Blackburn Rovers.

Weather

The time has come for the most important post of matchday*...

It's pretty miserable in Liverpool weather-wise today.

It's been raining here all day and that's set to continue throughout the afternoon, with the temperature rising no higher than 11 degrees.

A warm, waterproof jacket is a must if you're heading to Goodison, then.

Divock's derby day preview

We caught up with the hero of that Anfield meeting with Everton back in December at Melwood on Friday.

Divock Origi marked his second Premier League start of the season with a goal and an impressive 90-minute run-out on the left wing in the midweek 5-0 win over Watford - and our No.27 is ready to make an impact against the Blues again today.

"I think it was a good boost for me," Origi told Liverpoolfc.com, of his display versus the Hornets.

"It’s been a good season for us all and I always said that I wanted to shine my light, so I think having played that game, an important game, and being able to help the team, play my game and show my qualities, I was very happy."

Will Firmino be fit?

That question headlined the 'team news' section of the boss' press conference on Friday.

“He was out there in the running [on Thursday] but we have to see how he reacts,” the boss said.

“He is very positive, that’s Bobby’s nature. We have to see. I don’t see any other player – OK, we have maybe two or three more of them – being even in contention for that game after the little problem he had.

“It looks really good but if he will be ready for Sunday, I don’t know in this second.”

Liverpool have no fresh injury concerns to contend with, with Dejan Lovren having returned to training earlier in the week.
