Burnley v Liverpool: Live matchday blog

Liverpool came from behind to set a new club record points total after 15 league games of a season after a 3-1 win over Burnley at Turf Moor thanks to goals from James Milner, Roberto Firmino and Xherdan Shaqiri.

And here's how the top of the table is looking...

Here's the story of the game in Opta stats and widgets...

Full Time

Burnley 1-3 Liverpool

Liverpool set a new club record for most points after 15 games of a league season as they move onto 39 after beating Burnley at Turf Moor.

Jack Cork gave the home team the lead on 54 minutes when he prodded a loose ball home from a corner, but the Reds quickly levelled through James Milner.

Roberto Firmino then came off the bench to score with his first touch and Xherdan Shaqiri sealed the result in stoppage-time.

91

Goal

GOAL! XHERDAN SHAQIRI!

Liverpool have the cushion of a third goal - just seconds after Burnley hit the post from a corner.

Alisson does superbly to keep the ball in play once it's worked back into the area and releases Sturridge, who in turn lofts it forward to Salah.

The Egyptian spots Shaqiri's dart into the box and hooks it across, allowing our No.23 to drill home.

Get in.

90

Four minutes of added time to be played...

86

Yellow Card

Vydra is boked for a late one on Keita.

86

Salah is sent scampering into the box by Firmino, but his right-foot shot is saved by Hart.

83

Substitution

Vydra comes on for Barnes for the hosts.

82

How is it not 3-1?

Keita and Salah have efforts saved by Hart before the former turns a Henderson shot towards goal with a flick between his legs that is cleared off the line by Bardsley.

So close.

79

Westwood bends one towards the Liverpool goal, but Alisson claims.

73

The new Bobby Firmino song is belting out from the away end now.

71

Substitution

Burnley change: Brady and Wood off, Lennon and Vokes on.

69

Goal

GOAL! ROBERTO FIRMINO!

Liverpool are in front - and Roberto Firmino has just scored with his first touch.

A free-kick 40 yards out in a central position is hoisted towards the left of the box by Alexander-Arnold. It's met on the slide by Van Dijk, who squares for Firmino to tap in unmarked from four yards out.

2-1 to the Reds now.

65

Substitution

Here are those changes as Salah and Firmino come on for Moreno and Origi.

61

Goal

Goal! James Milner!

Liverpool have the speedy response they would have been desperate for.

Origi nudges the ball off to Milner on the edge of the area, who slides a low right-foot shot into the bottom corner with Hart rooted to the spot.

1-1.

61

Salah and Firmino are being readied for action on the sidelines.

54

Goal

Goal for Burnley - Jack Cork

The hosts have the lead at Turf Moor as Cork scrambles the ball home at corner.

Alisson does well to block Tarkowski's header from a corner. Barnes challenges the goalkeeper as he tries to pounce on the loose ball and it breaks for Cork, who taps in.

53

Off the post!

Keita lines up an absolute rocket with his left foot. It looks goal-bound, but Hart gets a fingertip to it to deflect the ball onto the post and behind.

Unlucky!

52

Shaqiri's corner finds the head of Van Dijk, but he nods into the back of a defender.

47

Chance

Sturridge takes aim from the edge of the area with a low, left-foot curler that Hart needs to tip around the base of the post.

Kick-Off

And we're off again

Burnley re-start the game at Turf Moor, where it remains 0-0.

The tale of the first-half tape...

Half Time

Burnley 0-0 Liverpool

It's goalless at the break at a rain-soaked Turf Moor, with little to write home about for either side.

The Reds lost Joe Gomez to injury mid-way through the half.

45

One minute of added time to be played...

41

Disallowed Goal

Ashley Barnes hammers in from a free-kick into the area and runs off to celebrate... but he's flagged offside.

39

Keita has a go from a tight angle... straight at Hart at his near post.

37

Milner spins and shoots from Shaqiri's pass, but Tarkowski blocks.

36

Bardsley smacks Van Dijk's clearance from a corner back towards goal from 30 yards out. It whistles past Alisson's right-hand post.

34

The ball deflects into the path of Keita invitingly inside the area, but his strike is charged down by a defender

29

Chance

Van Dijk rises to plant a header goalwards from Milner's corner, but it's too close to Hart.

23

Substitution

This is a worrying blow for the Reds. Gomez is unable to continue and needs to be carried from the position he landed in after the challenge just off the pitch.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is sent on in his place.

21

Liverpool down to 10 men for the moment - Gomez needs treatement after a heavy challenge from Ben Mee.

18

Now Gomez needs to defend smartly to prevent Wood getting a clean strike in on goal from close range.

18

Milner's deep cross to the back post finds Sturridge unmarked, but the striker can't control it and rolls behind.

13

Moreno arrows one towards goal on the half-volley from the left of the area. TV replays indicate it looks like he meant to shoot, and it's not too far away.

11

Westwood scuffs an effort over the crossbar as Burnley begin to apply pressure

11

Wood almost gets clean through on Alisson's goal after a long ball forward, but he's thwarted by a recovery challenge from Matip.

10

Not much to report in the opening 10 minutes here at Turf Moor. It's been a fairly low-key start in the heavy rain

Klopp explains team selection

Jürgen Klopp has explained why he's elected to make seven changes to Liverpool's starting line-up at Burnley tonight.

“That’s absolutely normal in this period of the season," he said. “I said to the boys in the meeting: I have done the job now for a while and if somebody would have told me 15 years ago I could change seven positions and have a line-up like that, I would have said it was not possible.

“We do it because we can do it, because we have to do it in two or three cases, and because we can do it because we have these boys. They train really hard.

“The midfielders played a lot of games already. We had to change the midfield, the most intense area of the pitch. Using Daniel was clear; Div after the last game makes sense, using the momentum, trying to use it. Alberto – Robbo played pretty much all the games so far. Gini played a lot of games.

“There’s always a reason. But, in the end, you cannot only change; you have to make sure that it fits, that it’s tuned. The two sessions we had where we could work a little bit on it, it looked really well, so I’m looking forward to this game.”

'We have to start somewhere...'

Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton is hoping the Clarets can get a result tonight that begins to turn their form around.

He wrote in the matchday programme: “We need all the players, staff and supporters to continue pulling in the same direction – as we always have done – and we can turn it around. Other teams in the division have shown what a couple of positive results can do to transform their position.

“A visit from Liverpool isn’t an easy place to start, given their standing in the game and current form at the top end of the Premier League.

“But we have to begin somewhere and, rest assured, we will be giving everything tonight and in the next few games to get back on track and start moving up the table.”

Pre-match

'Nights like this are special...'

Burnley boss Sean Dyche is hoping to make life difficult for the Reds tonight: “Liverpool have enjoyed a terrific start to the season and already look capable of mounting a serious title challenge this season, but will know they face another challenge tonight.

“Nights under the lights here at the Turf are always a little bit special and it’s important, from our point of view, that we put in a performance in front of our home fans, following the weekend defeat at Crystal Palace.”

'I feel there is something going on here'

Virgil van Dijk has spoken of his happiness at Liverpool - but the No.4 is not satisfied just yet.

"I think I expected a lot from my move," Van Dijk told ESPN. "I've expected a lot from myself, to improve as a player and as a human being as well.

"It has been going well and good, obviously, but in the end we have nothing at this moment other than a lot of improvement and being on the right track.

"But I feel there is something going on here. We have got great momentum at the moment.

"Everyone is feeling good. Obviously we can all still improve a lot of our game, but like I said, there is definitely the feeling that we are on the right track."

Statistically speaking...

Did you know that Liverpool will set a new club record for most points obtained after the opening 15 matches of a league season should they win tonight?

Victory for the Reds will take them to 39 points - one more than they had at the same stage of the 1904-05, 1978-79 and 1990-91 campaigns.

Here are a selection of other interesting pre-match facts...

  • If selected, Jordan Henderson will play the 300th league game of his career.

  • Liverpool have lost only two of their last 11 league visits to Turf Moor.

  • In the eight Premier League clashes between the teams, the Reds have won six with a draw and a loss, scoring 16 times and conceding five.

  • Liverpool have not lost any of their 22 away matches in all competitions in which Roberto Firmino has scored (19 wins, three draws).

Team news

We'll bring you the confirmed Liverpool line-up first later on, of course, but Klopp's press conference gave us a few clues as to who might and might not be involved this evening.

Skipper Jordan Henderson is available to return after serving his one-match suspension at the weekend, but Sadio Mane (foot) and Andy Robertson (knock) are doubts for the Reds.

Meanwhile, Burnley midfielder Steven Defour is 'touch and go' because of a knee issue, Sean Dyche told the media.

'I knew before I came here how tough it is at Burnley'

Fresh from his assertive, impressive display versus Everton, we caught up with Fabinho to get his thoughts on the trip to Turf Moor.

And, while he's only been in the Premier League for a little over five months, the Brazilian is well aware of the tests involved in playing against Sean Dyche's side.

"The players mention that it’s a difficult place to play. But even before I came here, I knew Burnley as a tough, physical team who were very difficult to beat at home," the midfielder told Liverpoolfc.com.

“But that’s what it’s like in the Premier League, especially away from home. We’ll work on that [and] study their team to be prepared for Wednesday.”
