NewsExplained: The special Hugo Ekitike artwork on Sunday's LFC programme cover
A special manga artwork will adorn the front cover of the official Liverpool FC matchday programme this weekend.
The Reds are back at Anfield on Sunday afternoon to host Tottenham Hotspur in a Premier League encounter.
Featuring on the cover of the programme for the fixture is a unique image of forward Hugo Ekitike created by Japanese manga artist Masa Ichikawa in collaboration with the club’s official publishing partner, Kodansha.
Best known for the manga series A-BOUT!, Ichikawa has put trademark bold, high-energy style into a depiction that captures Ekitike in the midst of a goal celebration.
“I focus on colour, facial expression, and poses that feel powerful and full of energy,” explains Ichikawa, who used Ekitike’s double strike at Leeds United in December as a reference point.
“I love Hugo Ekitike’s positive attitude. By drawing him, I wanted to express a positive message. I also wanted to capture his dynamism, which is one of his key qualities.
“And the fierce joy he shows for just a moment after scoring is so compelling, so I paid particular attention to getting his expression right.”
The one-off cover is the latest to showcase the manga form on the LFC matchday programme, following similar editions in previous seasons.
Ichikawa revealed the overwhelming joy at receiving the opportunity, adding: “Liverpool FC has taught me what it means to never give up until the very end – through so many matches and players.
“To be able to draw the matchday programme cover for such a world-class club is a real honour.
“The whole world knows how much LFC fans love the club. To become a small part of their matchday experience is one of the greatest joys of my life.
“If I had to put this incredible moment into words, it would be: Unbelievable!”
