Liverpool won the UEFA Super Cup by beating Chelsea 5-4 on penalties in Istanbul following a 2-2 draw following extra-time.

Full Time

Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea (5-4 penalties)

Liverpool lift the fourth Super Cup of their history after beating Chelsea on penalties in Istanbul.

Sadio Mane struck twice in between goals from Olivier Giroud and Jorginho (penalty) in a closely-fought contest at the Besiktas Arena.

But Adrian was the hero, saving from Tammy Abraham in the shootout to secure the trophy from the Reds.

Abraham: Saved by Adrian!

Liverpool win the Super Cup 5-4 on penalties!

Mount: Scores.

Origi: Scores.

Barkley: Scores.

Fabinho: Scores.

Jorginho: Scores.

Firmino up first: Scores!

Here we go, then...

A worry here as Fabinho has to be helped off the pitch by the club's medical team after going down with what looked like cramp at the end of extra-time.

Full Time

Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea

And so to penalties to determine the winner of the Super Cup here in Istanbul.

Chelsea start the second half in extra-time.

Half Time

Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea

Half-time in extra-time. Mane's early strike cancelled out by Jorginho's spot-kick.

Two minutes to be played at the end of the first half of extra-time.

Abraham meets Barkley's low ball at the near post, but steers it just wide of the back stick.

A let-off for Liverpool.

Origi is on for Mane.

Goal for Chelsea - Jorginho

The Chelsea midfielder rolls home the penalty to level up the scoreline.

Penalty to Chelsea

Adrian is deemed to have brougt down Abraham inside the box.

Adrian saves Abraham's close-range shot.

Sadio has his second and puts Liverpool in front as he rasps home from Firmino's pull back inside the area.

Get in!

Gomez drives forward and has an effort deflected into the gloves of Kepa.

He's operating at left-back following Robertson's departure.

Reds re-start...

Liverpool begin the first period of extra-time in Istanbul.

Trent Alexander-Arnold replaces Andy Robertson before the start of extra-time.

Full Time

Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea

And so it's to extra-time in Istanbul. Sadio Mane struck early in the second half to cancel out Olivier Giroud's opener, but the 90 minutes conclude level at Besiktas Park.

Salah flashes a ball across the face of goal, just in front of Firmino.

Two minutes of additional time to be played in Istanbul at the end of the 90...

Zouma heads over from a corner.

Chelsea enjoying a late spell of pressure, here. As it stands, we're heading for extra-time.

Mane slides agonisingly across the face of goal from Salah's pass... but he was flagged offside anyway.

Yellow Card

Henderson is shown yellow for hauling back Emerson

Another Chelsea change - Christensen off for Tomori.

Disallowed Goal

Mount has the ball in the back of the net - but it's chalked off for offside.

Chelsea open up Liverpool, but Pedro's shot from Kante's pull-back is blocked by Van Dijk.

Salah's shot from the free-kick is deflected over the bar by the head of Abraham in the wall.

Yellow Card

Azpilicueta goes into the book - perhaps for his remonstrations rather than his actual foul on Mane, which has given Liverpool a free-kick in a good position.

Off the bar!

Wijnaldum tees up Salah for a clear shot in the box following a corner routine from Henderson. The Egyptian's effort is parried by Kepa after deflecting off Christensen. The Chelsea goalkeeper then recovers to tip Van Dijk's follow-up onto the crossbar.

So close for Liverpool.

Double change for Chelsea - Giroud and Pulisic off, Abraham and Mount on.

Pedro picks out Pulisic's run towards the edge of the area; however, Gomez blocks the former Borussia Dortmund man's shot.

A second Liverpool change sees Wijnaldum come on for Milner.

Salah rolls a return ball just the tinest fraction too far in front of the unmarked Firmino eight yards out.

Liverpool counter at speed and Henderson has a shot deflected into the gloves of Kepa from Mane's pass on the edge of the box.

Emerson breaks into the space in the Reds' box, but his pull back is nudged well wide by Giroud.

Fabinho cracks an effort a few inches wide of the post from the edge of the box.

Instant impact from Firmino, who nudges Fabinho's ball into the path of Mane.

The forward is initially foiled by Kepa, but sweeps in at the second attempt.

1-1 now.

Back under way...

Chelsea re-start the game in Istanbul.

Roberto Firmino is on for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at half-time for Liverpool.

First-half stats, provided by Opta...

Half Time

Liverpool 0-1 Chelsea

The Reds are behind at the break following Olivier Giroud's 36th-minute strike in Istanbul.

Disallowed Goal

Pulisic has the ball in the net but it's ruled out for offside.

Chelsea on top here.

Goal for Chelsea - Giroud

The Blues take the lead in Istanbul as Pulisic threads a pass through for Giroud, who beats Adrian by steering across goal and into the far corner.

1-0 to Chelsea.

Adrian produces a fine - and crucial - stop at the feet of Kovacic after Pedro had slid him in.

Mane plants a firm downward header goalwards from a Milner corner. It's too close to Kepa, though.

Van Dijk meets a Milner corner ahead of Kepa, though he loops it over the crossbar.

Pulisic sweeps a low ball across Liverpool's six-yard box, but there's no Chelsea shirt there to tuck it home.

Giroud is foiled by Adrian after a break sends him clean through... but he'd have been flagged offside had he scored, anyway.

Giroud hoists an overhead kick well wide of goal. Bit ambitious from the Chelsea forward, but the Blues enjoying a good spell here.

Off the bar

Pedro scampers into space on the right of Liverpool's box and cracks an effort against the crossbar from an angle.

Robertson produces a fantastic challenge to nudge out Pedro after Kovacic had attempted to play him clean through on goal with a pass from deep.

Salah escapes behind the Chelsea defence down the right and makes his way into the area; however, his prod goalwards is thwarted by Kepa.

The Blues break and Giroud drags a low effort well wide of Adrian's far post.

Christensen cuts out Henderson's attempted ball to the unmarked Mane in the six-yard box. Important interception for Chelsea, that.

Pedro cuts in from the left and bends one towards the bottom corner, but it's wide of the post.

The ball breaks invitingly for Fabinho inside the box from a free-kick, but his attempt to drive it into the centre left-footed is cut out by Kepa's gloves.

Mane has a go with a spectacular overhead kick from Henderson's cross. It hits the arms of Christensen but the referee isn't interested in the penalty appeals.

Important challenge from Matip inside the box to prevent Pulisic getting a clear shot in after a quickly taken free-kick into his path by Jorginho.

And here we go...

James Milner starts the game in Istanbul and we're off and running at Besiktas Park.

Here come the teams - and the Champions League and UEFA Cup trophies with them...

And now it's time for the opening ceremony...

You'll Never Walk Alone is booming around Besiktas Park...

Naby Keita fitness latest

Keita will miss tonight’s clash due to a muscle strain.

The Liverpool midfielder left Tuesday evening’s training session at Besiktas Park early after feeling the issue and is not part of the squad for the game in Istanbul.

The muscle strain occurred around the hip area and Keita will be assessed further by the Reds’ medical team in the coming days.

*** Istanbul weather update klaxon ***

It might be a cup final tonight, but we're not too distracted to bring you an official Weather Update™.

And quite frankly, if you thought we were, then we're a bit offended, to be honest.

But, anyway, here we go.

Well,'s very own Glenn Price has described the conditions as "muggy".

What he means is, it's incredibly warm and humid inside Besiktas Park, despite being overcast.

Our trusty thermometer which has made the journey is showing 26 degrees - and it's unlikely to change for the rest of the evening.

It's gonna be a warm one.

The stage?

It's set.

Rule reminder

Remember that extra-time will be played tonight if scores are level after 90 minutes and potentially a penalty shootout afterwards.

Did you know?

Liverpool have made five previous appearances in the UEFA Super Cup, though it should have been six.

However, fixture congestion meant their 1981 tie with Dinamo Tbilisi could not be scheduled.

The gaffer's view

We sat down with Jürgen Klopp ahead of the Super Cup final and the boss gave his thoughts on what to expect from Chelsea under new boss Frank Lampard.

"I think Frank showed last year with Derby that he's a very, very, very good manager because he changed Derby pretty much overnight," he said.

"I didn't know Derby too well but what I heard about it and when I saw them playing last year, especially against United if you want, it was: 'What a game!'

"So, proper football, really high intensity, all that stuff, it's all there, what you need. Good defending [and] high defending, so it will be a challenge. It will be a really interesting game and for us a proper job to do."

"It's a chance to start the season well with another European title. It'll be a good fixture against a team that we, of course, have been competing against for titles domestically as well in England.

"I think [winning] it would give us more confidence. Every time you win a title, your name goes down once again in the club's history. Of course, with the team that we have, our mentality and ambition is to win.

"So we're going to compete for this title. I think it will help our confidence greatly."

  • An appearance for Joel Matip at Besiktas Park would be his 100th for Liverpool

So, how will Liverpool spend their day in Istanbul ahead of tonight's Super Cup clash with Chelsea?

Well, if you were wondering, wonder no more.

The Reds have trained at the Türk Telekom Stadium this morning, which is, of course, the home of Galatasaray.

They'll be returning to their team hotel shortly, where they'll have some lunch before resting up this afternoon.

With kick-off not until 10pm local time, there's a longer wait than usual to get going tonight.

Meanwhile, in Taksim Square, fans are starting to congregate and chants are beginning to fill the air as excitement continues to build.

Team news

Adrian is in line to make his first Liverpool start in the Super Cup final following the injury sustained by Alisson Becker last Friday.

Goalkeepers Andy Lonergan and Caoimhin Kelleher also travelled with the 23-man squad on Tuesday, but Dejan Lovren was absent due to illness.

Sadio Mane is fit to start if selected.

Chelsea, meanwhile, must check on N'Golo Kante after he picked up an injury at the weekend, though Frank Lampard is boosted by having Antonio Rudiger and Willian with his squad in Istanbul.

Twelve substitutes can be named by each side, with three available to use in the 90 minutes and a fourth possible if the tie goes to extra-time.
