Red Star Belgrade v Liverpool: Live matchday blog

Liverpool suffered a 2-0 defeat to Red Star Belgrade in Serbia as Milan Pavkov's first-half brace secured victory for the home side in Champions League Group C.

Klopp: “We were not surprised by Red Star’s tactics. In Liverpool we controlled the game, tonight we didn’t. We made life a bit too easy tonight, that’s the problem. They deserved it for the passion they showed.”

Klopp: “We have to admit - congratulations Red Star, it was well deserved. They have the three points, we have nothing."

Klopp: “We tried to change for the second half. We had moments, we had kind of nearly-chances, the biggest in the last two three minutes and before that not enough.”

Klopp: “The start was intense, that was clear. Red Star wanted to strike back, which they did. We had the first big chance with Daniel, a very big one. Each goal in a game like this leads the game in a specific direction.”

Jürgen Klopp has arrived for his post-match press conference in Belgrade.

Here's how Group C looks after that result, with Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain still to play later this evening.

Full Time

Red Star Belgrade 2-0 Liverpool

The Reds' hopes of progressing into the last 16 of the Champions League take a blow as Milan Pavkov's first-half doubles condems them to defeat in Belgrade.

Salah's snap-shot from a loose ball inside the area is saved by Borjan.

Five minutes of added time to be played.

Firmino stands a cross up to the back post where Van Dijk sends a header onto the roof of the net.

Van Dijk and Matip cause problems for Red Star at Gomez's long throw. The ball eventually falls for Salah, but he can't turn the ball past the goalkeeper from the tightest of angles.

Liverpool sub: Divock Origi on for Adam Lallana.

Final change for the home side. Jovicici on for Krsticic.

Salah controls Borjan's claw away from a corner and shoots under pressure, but he strikes the outside of the post and it goes behind.

Salah's deflected drive from the edge of the area is pushed behind by Borjan.

A second change for Red Star - Goran Causic is on for Marko Marin.

The home side are forced into a change. Filip Stojkoviccan't continue after sustaining an injury and is replaced by Marko Gobeljic.

Robertson's swinging cross from the left takes a deflection and loops onto the top of the Red Star crossbar.

Liverpool have made a much more encouraging start to the second half as they chase an early goal.

Mane goes close to turning it Firmino's deflected cross from close range, but he can't get enough power behind it as he loses his footing.

Early second-half chance for Red Star as a long throw into the box causes panic, but the Reds eventually manage to avert the danger.

Back under way

Can Liverpool get back into this one in Belgrade?

A double change at half-time as Alexander-Arnold and Sturridge make way for Gomez and Firmino.

Half Time

Red Star Belgrade 2-0 Liverpool

Jürgen Klopp's side have plenty of work to do if they're to take anything home from Belgrade after Milan Pavkov's double inside the opening 29 minutes leaves them trailing at the break.

Yellow Card

Lallana is booked for a challenge.

Sturridge wriggles into a shooting position on the edge of the box; however, he scoops wide of the near post.

Wijnaldum has a header from a corner blocked in front of the line from a Milner delivery. Liverpool work it back into the area and Lallana's nod towards goal is deflected behind.

Goal for Red Star - Pavkov

Red Star double their lead as Pavkov pounces on possession 25 yards out, holds off a challenge and then let's fly with a dipping effort that evades Alisson's reach.

Salah rolls it off to Lallana inside the box, who takes a touch and looks to get a shot in but is quickly crowded out.

Goal for Red Star - Milan Pavkov

The home team take the lead as Pavkov plants a firm header into the back of the net from a corner.

Alisson is called into action as he has to push Ban Nabouhane's crisp first-time effort from range behind the post.

Another chance for Sturridge at the end of a swift Liverpool counter, but this time he has a shot on the turn deflected behind.

It should be 1-0 to Liverpool as the visitors open up their hosts down the left, allowing Mane to surge into space and cross. Robertson tries to sweep it into the corner, but it ends up in the direction of Sturridge, who scoops over unmarked from yards out.

A Red Star corner drops for Vujadin Savic with his back to goal. He spins and hooks a shot not too far over the crossbar from eight yards out.

Salah's driven cross from the left skims off the head of Sturridge and flies in the direction of Alexander-Arnold, who lofts an effort high and wide from the corner of the area.

Marin cuts inside and shoots low, but there's not enough behind it to trouble Alisson and it's a simple take for the goalkeeper.

Mane escapes down the left and hoists a ball back into the middle, where Milner hooks a volley well over the bar from the edge of the area.

Yellow Card

An early booking for the home side - Marko Marin goes into the book for a late lunge at Alexander-Arnold.

Red Star win an early corner as Van Dijk hacks a long throw-in behind - and their fans' excitement levels grow.

Ultimately, it comes to nothing for the hosts.

And we're off!

Liverpool get us under way in Belgrade.

Come on you Reds!

That's quite the welcome for the teams here as the atmosphere cranks up a notch or two.

Some great footage below of Liverpool's only previous away match against Red Star Belgrade, which the hosts won 2-1 in 1973 - and the goals weren't bad!

Let's hope for a different outcome tonight.

U19s beat Red Star to seal top-two finish

It's all over in today's Youth League match in Belgrade - and Liverpool registered a 2-0 win over Red Star, thanks to second-half goals from Curtis Jones and Adam Lewis.

That victory means Barry Lewtas' unbeaten side are guaranteed a top-two finish in Group C and will qualify for the last 16 automatically should they avoid defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in France later this month.

U19s in action

Liverpool's U19s are unbeaten in the UEFA Youth League so far this season and that record remains intact at half-time in their clash with Red Star Belgrade today, with the score 0-0 as it stands.

Keep an eye on for a full match report, pictures and highlights after the game.

Three years in Europe with Klopp

Yesterday marked the three-year anniversary of Klopp's first European victory with the Reds, a 1-0 result at Rubin Kazan.

And, asked about the milestone during the flight to Serbia for his latest continental tie, the boss reflected on the highs and lows since - and insisted Liverpool can dream big again...

"So far when we were involved in a European competition we were in the final - let's carry on like this… or try!" he told

"It's getting more and more difficult but big things are still possible. So far it was absolutely OK, it was really interesting."

Three key battles

So, where will this one be won and lost?

With some expert help, we've picked out three individual duels that may have a critical impact on the outcome of the game in Belgrade. Click here to read more.

Red Star's role in changing LFC's philosophy

When these sides met in the 1973 European Cup, Red Star's 4-2 aggregate victory was a watershed moment in Liverpool's relationship with the tournament.

Here's the story...

Stat attack

Impress your friends with these facts before kick-off...

  • Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah are one goal behind Ian Rush (14) in the Reds' all-time European Cup goalscorers list

  • Liverpool have scored at least two goals in 14 of their last 18 European matches
  • The Reds recorded their biggest ever Champions League win on this day in 2007 - 8-0 against Besiktas
  • Red Star played their first game in this season's competition on July 11

An atmosphere awaits

Much of the conversation at Klopp's pre-match press conference centred on the atmosphere awaiting Liverpool at the Rajko Mitic Stadium tonight.

The boss respects the influence Red Star's fans will try to have on the game but believes he knows the solution for his team.

"Atmosphere… we are from Liverpool so we know how big the influence can be," he said.

"The only way I know to cool the atmosphere down is playing really good football. That's what we have to try; to be ready for a fight and ready for a big game.

"We will be ready, that's the only thing I can make sure of. Then the boys have to do the job on the pitch, of course."

Team news

Neither manager was giving much away ahead of the game about potential team selections but we do know a little about who could be involved.

Liverpool are without Nathaniel ClyneJordan Henderson and Xherdan Shaqiri but were able to include Naby Keita and Dejan Lovren in their 21-man travelling squad after injury.

Red Star have Marko Marin available again but Richmond Boakye remains a doubt; goalkeeper Milan Borjan was left out of their league match last weekend as a precaution

The last meeting

Forty-five years after their only previous clashes, the Reds and Red Star met at Anfield 13 days ago.

Relive the best of the action in our highlights package below...

Did you know?

This game is Liverpool's 200th in the European Cup/Champions League.

So far, the Reds have won 113 matches in the competition and scored 376 goals.

Steven Gerrard has scored the most (30) while Jamie Carragher has made more appearances than any other player (91).

The story so far

Top meets bottom in Group C here, with Liverpool's 4-0 home victory over Red Star last month moving them to the summit and leaving the Serbian side fourth.

The Reds have six points from their opening three games; the hosts' sole point so far was achieved from a goalless draw with Napoli at the Rajko Mitic Stadium.

Here are all the numbers behind their Champions League campaigns to date...

*Drum roll*

It's time for the official matchday blog weather update™.

And it's no ordinary dispatch from Belgrade as the conditions are, we're reliably informed, unseasonably warm. The sun is brightly punctuating clear skies above the city and the thermometers register 20 degrees or so. That'll likely drop a touch before kick-off, of course.

Press talk

Jürgen Klopp and Andy Robertson assumed media duties after Liverpool's arrival in Belgrade, holding a press conference at the Rajko Mitic Stadium for local reporters and those who have travelled from England.

As with every match preview throughout the season, you can see everything they had to say about the game via our official YouTube channel...

The players, manager and staff took breakfast together a short while ago inside the team hotel, with their routine ahead of tonight's match set to start in earnest now.

Liverpool trained at the Rajko Mitic Stadium on Monday night, having flew out to Serbia from John Lennon Airport just before midday.
