Malcolm McVean holds the honour of scoring Liverpool's first ever goal in league football.

It came during the second half of the Second Division fixture at Middlesbrough Ironopolis on September 2, 1893.

Inside-right McVean scored nine times during the club's inaugural Football League season but he only managed five the following year as the team struggled to cope with a higher standard of football in the First Division and were immediately relegated.

He remained at Anfield for a further two years, during which he won his second Second Division championship medal in 1896 and also helped his side establish themselves in the First Division by comfortably retaining their status as one of the country's leading clubs in 1897.
