Liverpool will not give up on their pursuit of Mohamed Salah, despite opening talks with an alternative summer signing.

The Reds have made an inquiry about exciting young Portugal international Gelson Martins, and are thought to be in preliminary talks over a possible £40million swoop.

Salah's Italian club, Roma, are so far refusing to budge over their £42m valuation on the Egypt international, who Klopp had identified as the pacy winger he desperately wants to provide further attacking options for his side.

Liverpool had a £28m bid rejected for the former Chelsea man, but they will not give up hope on thrashing out a deal with the Italians.

The Serie A side do want to sell but are holding out for their full valuation of a player who scored 19 league goals from a wide position last season.

Klopp will continue to pursue his first-choice attacking target, and will only switch to Sporting Lisbon star Martins if there is no chance of a deal with Roma deal.
