Liverpool have moved ahead of Napoli in the chase for Poland international midfielder Piotr Zielinski according to reports in Italy.

Earlier this week, Corriere dello Sport reported that a deal to take the 22-year-old to Naples was in place and the player was keen on the move but now Italian football journalist Tancredi Palmeri says that Zielinski will prefer a switch to Anfield.

He said: “Liverpool target Zielinski has given his priority to find a deal with Liverpool, choosing them and refusing Napoli’s proposal.”

The playmaker, who is owned by Udinese but has spent the last two seasons on loan at Empoli, was even said to have been spotted wearing a Liverpool shirt with his name and number 10 on the back last month.

Jurgen Klopp is looking for new energy in his midfield this summer but the Reds interest in the player is a long-standing one.

When he was just 14, they wanted to sign him along with Bayer Leverkusen and Dutch pair Feyenoord and Hereenveen but he moved to Italy aged 17.
