Loris Karius is a step closer to completing his £4.7million move from Mainz to Liverpool after he arrived on Merseyside to complete his medical.

The German goalkeeper, who spent part of his youth career with Manchester City, will arrive to put pressure on current No.1 Simon Mignolet.

Karius started all 34 Bundesliga games for Mainz this year, conceding 42 goals for the sixth placed club.

The 22-year-old who has been capped for Germany at U21 level, also kept 10 clean sheets in the German top flight.

Karius will be the third signing of what is anticipated to be a busy summer at Anfield, following on from Joel Matip and Marko Grujic.

Liverpool are still pursuing a move for Mario Gotze but the fact they cannot offer Champions League football next season might be a stumbling block.

Gotze joined Bayern Munich from Jurgen Klopp's Dortmund in 2013, but despite scoring Germany's winner in the 2014 World Cup final the 23-year-old has found first-team football hard to come by at the Allianz Arena.
