Jürgen Klopp insists Liverpool are ready to ‘put all we have’ into Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Sevilla following their defeat to Manchester City.

The Reds welcome Eduardo Berizzo’s side to Anfield four days on from their 5-0 reverse at Etihad Stadium in a fixture that marks the club’s first appearance in the competition’s group stages since December 2014.

As such, while acknowledging the disappointment of succumbing to City and their numerical advantage following Sadio Mane’s first-half dismissal, Klopp has little doubt that his players will be fully prepared for such an occasion.

“I didn’t work hard on this because as human beings we have a lot of rights but we have not the right to be down because of something we were responsible for,” the boss told his pre-match press conference, after being asked whether he has had to lift morale in his squad after the weekend.

“I didn’t blame the boys for the second half, I had a big part in this, especially in the second half because I saw the game and I saw us on a good way with a performance which I was not happy with, but I saw that in a few parts we were for sure the better team. We should have been in the lead before they scored the goal, or after the first one or whatever.

“Yes, with 10 men it changed, that’s how it is. But, how it is when you have a problem, you can put your finger on it or you can ignore it.

“It was not a problem with the performance, not until a specific point, and after that, how everybody knows, City or Manchester is the worst place to be with one man down on a day like this and we did not really well afterwards, we could’ve defended better.

“But how I said, until we conceded the third goal I thought it also made sense to try to score actually, [but] after the third one it was again a different game and then the fifth one was in the last minute.

“But tomorrow we have another competition and we worked so long, so hard for it and we actually plan to put all we have into this game. Nothing that happened last Saturday would stop us.”

Sevilla arrive on Merseyside having made an impressive start to life under new coach Berizzo.

The Andalusian club - who, like Liverpool, reached the Champions League group phase via the play-off round - have taken seven points from their first three La Liga games of the season, and Klopp is anticipating a stern examination of his team’s credentials on Wednesday.

“I expect a very strong side of Sevilla. That’s real Champions League, that’s experience, that’s technically-skilled players, that’s good match plan, that’s a hard-to-play team - they have all our respect,” the manager said.

“They’ve had good start in the season, they changed the manager and found again a really good one. It’s an outstanding job from Sevilla again in the last few years, lost now the sporting director and the manager and are still there and at the top of the league.

“They’re a really strong side and it’s real Champions League. We know who we will face.”
