West Ham v Liverpool: Live matchday blog

Our matchday blog told the whole story as Liverpool claimed a massive 4-0 win over West Ham United at the London Stadium in the Premier League...

Post-match

Klopp's verdict on crucial victory

Post-match

Firmino fitness update

Klopp confirmed at his post-match press conference that there was 'no chance' Roberto Firmino could have featured in this game after he was sidelined from training with a muscle issue.

The Brazilian could come back into contention for the season finale against Middlesbrough next weekend, though. That "would be cool" said the manager.

Klopp: “The first sentence in the dressing room: one more time, one more game, we have to stay focused 100 per cent.”

Post-match

The stats from an outstanding afternoon for Liverpool...

Post-match

Here's what that result means for the Premier League top six...

Full Time

West Ham 0-4 Liverpool

A hugely significant victory for Liverpool, with Sturridge, Coutinho (two) and Origi on target in the capital to claim three points that mean a top-four finish can be secured with a win over Middlesbrough at Anfield next weekend. Brilliant stuff from Klopp's side today.

90

Two minutes added on at London Stadium.

89

Substitution

Grujic and Woodburn on.

Coutinho and Lallana off.

86

Substitution

Lucas on.

Sturridge off.

84

Snodgrass went close to a great consolation for the Hammers, whacking a fine volley first time from a long ball crossfield - but it glides just off target. Unlucky.

77

Substitution

Snodgrass on.

Ayew off.

76

Goal

GOALLLLL!!!! ORIGI!!!!

It's four for Liverpool!

On their latest foray forward, Lallana was denied at close range by Adrian, but the ball ultimately came out to Origi for the Belgian to slot into the back of the net.

72

Coutinho attemped to complete a hat-trick with a free-kick effort from the left channel, but on that occasion the No.10 got his angles wrong and the shot was harmless.

Match shot: Sheer joy

69

Mignolet stood up well as substitute Fletcher raced clear along the left flank and into the penalty area. The forward looked to beat the Belgian at his near post, but he was equal to it.

65

So close to a fourth for Liverpool!

Origi tried his luck with an ambitious effort from long range that dipped dangerously towards goal, but not quite enough and instead bounced out off the crossbar

62

Yellow Card

Collins into the book.

61

Goal

GOALLLLL!!!! COUTINHO!!!!!

Exactly what Klopp would have wanted.

West Ham launched a big claim for a penalty inside the Liverpool box that was rejected, with Wijnaldum accused of a foul on Reid, allowing the visitors to counter and Coutinho eventually - and calmly - step around his marker and blast into the net.

Get in!

57

Goal

GOALLLLLL!!!!!! COUTINHO!!!!

It's 2-0 to Liverpool and another exquisite finish.

After Wijnaldum went close to a late Goal of the Season contender with an outrageous first-time volley that smacked against the crossbar, Coutinho picked up possession, dribbled through the home defence and slid a shot into the bottom corner. His 12th goal of 2016-17 and perhaps the most important.

54

Substitution

Double change by Bilic...

Feghouli and Fletcher on.

Calleri and Fonte off.

52

A clever pass between defenders by Sturridge released Origi in behind with space to pick out a cross - there was no obvious target in the middle, but West Ham conceded a corner with a rash clearance. Excellent from Liverpool so far in the second half.

50

Yellow Card

Yellow card shown to Fernandes for a cynical tackle on Coutinho.

47

A quick start by Liverpool and Adrian was forced into a reaction save from Origi's half-volley on Lallana's knockdown - which took a deflection en route.

Sturridge was unable to mop up the rebound, before Wijnaldum then worked the West Ham 'keeper with a daisy-cutter that might have nestled inside the right post but for his save.

46

Kick-Off

We're back under way, Lallana kicking off for Liverpool.

The half-time stats at London Stadium...

Round the 'keeper and in...

Half Time

West Ham 0-1 Liverpool

An incident-filled half at London Stadium ends with the visitors ahead. Sturridge's clinically-taken goal separates the sides, though Ayew's double hitting of the post in the closing moments served a reminder that there is work to be done.

44

Incredible.

We might need a rocket scientist to explain how Liverpool are still in front.

A corner in from the left side found Ayew completely free at the back post, but his prodded finish was directed against the post. A scramble ensued and the West Ham forward had another attempt, again striking the woodwork and Mignolet eventually collected the loose ball.

Phew.

Match shot: What it means

42

Coutinho corner, Matip header, off target. A connection that is really working so far today, aside from the final finish.

40

Matip is picked out by a Coutinho corner again, but the No.32 could not keep his header down, this after Origi had won the set-piece with a dribble and cross from the right.

35

Goal

GOALLLLLLLLL!!!!!!! STURRIDGE!!!

It felt like it was coming and Klopp's men have done it - with a sublime goal, too.

Coutinho dispatched a trademark pass through the West Ham defence from deep to find Sturridge's outstanding run off the right side. He opted to dribble around Adrian rather than shoot and was rewarded with a tap into an empty net.

Massive.

34

Better from Liverpool at the moment and a cross from Clyne eluded everyone in the box to reach Milner outside the area. His hit was scuffed off target, with Sturridge unable to make contact running in.

32

Sturridge involved again there, aiming for the near post with a strike from the right channel. It didn't have enough on it, though, and bobbled wide.

30

So nearly a glimpse of goal for Sturridge.

The striker won possession high up the pitch and tried to bear down on Adrian, but stumbled over the ball as he ran. The Englishman managed to recycle it to Coutinho, whose blast was blocked.

Match shot: Even in east London

26

At the other end, Coutinho was denied space by West Ham harrying but nevertheless lashed a well-struck shot towards goal. Over the bar, but a decent attempt by the Brazilian.

25

The home fans were incensed as Lanzini dribbled in from the right channel and evaded several challenges before eventually hitting the ground as Matip closed in. The referee waved away the appeals.

23

Decent approach play by Liverpool, started by Origi in his own territory, ended with Milner having a low strike from the left corner of the Hammers box. It took a deflection on the way and the lack of power therefore made it a straightforward stop for Adrian.

15

A snapshot from Coutinho at the edge of the area was too straight to seriously trouble Adrian, after the ball fell kindly to the No.10.

Match shot: Matip hits the bar

12

Plenty of action in these early stages and Mignolet had to react quickly to palm away a low shot from fully 25 yards by Edimilson Fernandes there. Still 0-0, somehow.

11

Unlucky!

Coutinho sent in a brilliant corner to the back post that found Matip in space to head at goal, but the defender's effort bounces off the ground and onto the crossbar, before West Ham cleared their lines.

7

Big let-off for Liverpool.

The Hammers moved the ball forward for Calleri, who held it up well and picked out the run of an unmarked Byram on the right side. He took a touch and drove a shot towards the far corner that - thankfully - ran wide.

5

Good strong claim by Mignolet at the back post after Cresswell had got around Clyne and lofted a high cross into the area. Lovren suffered a knock with the 'keeper, but soon picked himself up.

3

Klopp discussed the possibility of using Coutinho from a more withdrawn, central position in the build-up to the game, and the Brazilian has indeed started in the middle of the park. Lallana is further forward, with Sturridge and Origi split and playing wide on either flank.

The view from the opposition

Here's what West Ham boss Slaven Bilic has to say in his programme notes...

"Liverpool have had a good season, but they know they need a victory today to keep their destiny in their own hands when it comes to a UEFA Champions League place.

"We are motivated too, though, of course, for different reasons. We still have a chance of finishing in the top 10, and that is what we want to do, so we will be doing everything to end the season with two victories."
