Jordan Henderson has revealed that Liverpool's 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur was inspired by the players' feeling that they had let themselves, the manager and the supporters down during their poor start to 2017.

Going into the weekend's game, the Reds had won just one of their 10 fixtures in the new year, a run that cost them a shot at both the EFL Cup and FA Cup as well as harming their chances of a Premier League top-four finish.

As such, Jürgen Klopp's squad were extra determined to avoid another damaging defeat when Spurs arrived on Merseyside, and produced a ruthless performance to run out deserved winners.

Speaking after the game, Henderson expressed delight with the response shown by his teammates, though he warned that they must now consistently produce to atone for a difficult January.

"As players we took responsibility [because] we felt as though we let ourselves down, the manager down and the fans down," he said.

"You have to stick together. It was a tough time because we knew we hadn't won for so long and performance levels were not up to standard. But you have got to stay together and keep fighting and believing and we did that.

"Putting in that performance against Tottenham doesn't make up for it but it is a start and a step in the right direction. Now we have to build on that and keep going.

"It was definitely positive. The most pleasing thing was in the second half we were solid, focused, took the sting out of the game and did a lot of good things without the ball.

"Overall I felt we defended well as a team and attacked well as a team.

"We have fantastic quality in the team, great mentality and great character, but it is no good me just saying that. It is up to us to show that from now until the end of the season and keep putting in performances like that."

Liverpool's sticky patch reached its nadir just over a week ago as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Premier League strugglers Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.

Henderson was pleased to see the work put in at Melwood in the aftermath of that result pay dividends against Mauricio Pochettino's men.

"I wouldn't question the attitude of the players, it is very good," he added.

"But there were one or two things we needed to work on which we did last week in training to help us going forward.

"The first half especially at Hull was disappointing. You have a lot of possession in those games and sometimes you get caught on the counter-attack and we maybe switch off a little bit.

"But against Spurs we were very solid from start to finish. We need to make sure we're like that every week.

"I felt as though we've always had belief but performances over recent weeks haven't been up to the standard we've set ourselves and we've been punished.

"I thought everyone showed great character against Tottenham and now we have to make sure we are consistent with it. To win like we did was very pleasing and it will give everyone a big lift."

With the Reds' next game - against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium - just under two weeks away, Klopp is set to take his squad to Spain for a brief warm-weather training camp this week.

When asked about the trip, the captain said: "We'll be on the training field working hard.

"We have to make the most of that time and hopefully we will benefit from that and then we can kick on from the next game until the end of the season."
