Joel Matip will call on the experience gained from the difficult moments of his career thus far to help Liverpool overcome their recent slump - starting against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The Reds have won just one of their last 10 outings in all competitions ahead of the weekend's Anfield fixture, which will see them take on an opponent unbeaten since December.

According to Matip, the only way to emerge from such a rut is to work hard in training and aim to apply the lessons learned at Melwood on matchday.

And, should Jürgen Klopp's squad do that, the giant defender is certain they will emerge from their recent run as a stronger unit.

"[At] my old club, we had something similar, some times like this," he said.

"But we have to work hard to get more consistency. It's not always easy to get back on a good way if you had a bad time with not so positive moments.

"But you learn a lot from these negative moments and this can make us stronger."

Liverpool have dropped out of the Premier League's top four after failing to win any of their last five fixtures in England's top division.

But Matip insists he and his teammates are only interested in what the table looks like once the final whistle is blown on their 38th and final outing of 2016-17.

"We can see the table but only at the end of the season does the table count," he added.

"There are a lot of games and a lot of possibilities to get some points and we will use them.

"It's always nicer to be [higher] but the table doesn't count at the moment, it doesn't matter where you stand [until] the end."

Klopp's men are unbeaten in their seven meetings with the other teams who also occupy the top six this season.

Matip admits that fact can breed confidence, but he is wary of relying too much on the past repeating itself this weekend.

"It can give us confidence, we played very well against these teams," he continued.

"But now it is a new match and it doesn't matter what happened in the games before against teams like this.

"It's a new game, a new 90 minutes, and only these 90 minutes matter. We have the quality to fight against these teams and we [will] try to show this on Saturday."
