Joel Matip believes the 'positive experience' of last night's 1-1 draw with Chelsea will provide a welcome confidence boost in the Liverpool dressing room.

The Reds brought the curtain down on a difficult January as they came from behind to claim a point through Georginio Wijnaldum's second-half header.

Jürgen Klopp's team won just one of nine fixtures last month, and were on a three-game losing streak at Anfield prior to holding the Premier League leaders.

And Matip expects the effects of a morale-boosting result against an in-form opponent to be felt in the coming games.

"We have to take the positives, even if it is only one point," he told the Liverpool Echo.

"I think the supporters saw our courage and that we tried everything and tried to take the game to them.

"It showed we can help each other and of course it is better to see a game like this than losing against the other teams.

"It's not been easy but we have to keep going because we cannot change the past. We have to do everything we can do to change things in the future.

"Every player needs a positive experience or to get positive things in a game to get self-confident.

"I think this was a good step to get some of this self-confidence back and we are looking forward to playing against Hull on Saturday. We are in a good way."

LFCTV GO: Watch Mignolet's crucial penalty save again

The hosts' endeavour might not have been rewarded had Diego Costa's late penalty - awarded when he was tripped by Matip - not been saved by Simon Mignolet.

When asked about the moment, the No.32 reflected on the difficulties of keeping such a prolific opponent quiet, before suggesting a Chelsea win would not have been a fair reflection of the game.

"Costa is always dangerous and a threat and everyone had to play attention to him,” he added.

"It was a hard job. I don't know if it was a penalty.

"They had the penalty and missed but I think we had a little bit more from the game. They are in first position and it was a hard game. We did it a lot really well.

"They are top of the table but from the outside you couldn't say they were much better. They are 10 points better but you couldn't see this."
