Danny Ings will have the backing of everybody at Liverpool as he recovers from a second long-term injury, Emre Can has pledged.

The Reds striker is set to be out of action for seven to nine months after a collision during the EFL Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur caused an issue in his right knee which required surgery.

Ings, who missed the majority of 2015-16 with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, had been building up fitness and sharpness in the opening months of the season.

The news came as a huge disappointment to the player himself, manager Jürgen Klopp and the squad – and Can insists his teammate will have tremendous support in his recovery.

“It’s very hard and I feel very sorry for him,” said the midfielder.

“He’s a very good boy and it’s very hard for him, because he came back from injury and he now has a very long injury again. He played his first game again at Anfield and that happened. It’s very unlucky.

“But Danny is a very strong guy and he will come back stronger. We will be behind him, of course, and help him.”
