It was a busy day of news at Liverpool FC on Wednesday, while the U23s were in continental action against FC Porto – here is a summary of the key events at the club.

Our top three stories…

The day began with some deeply disappointing news as it was confirmed that Danny Ings has suffered a long-term injury to his right knee and required surgery.

The popular striker, who spent the majority of last season on the sidelines due to an anterior cruciate ligament issue, is expected to be out for between seven and nine months.

“To say we are gutted would be an understatement,” said Jürgen Klopp. “He is such a great boy and has worked so hard that he deserves better luck than this.”

The boss has been nominated for the FIFA coach of the year award for 2016 alongside nine of his peers, after leading Liverpool to two cup finals in his first seven months.

Dejan Lovren, meanwhile, has been reflecting on the mental strength and determination that has allowed the centre-back to successfully change the course of his Anfield career.

In a frank chat at Melwood, the No.6 explained his determination to ‘never stop fighting’ for the club he joined from Southampton in the summer of 2014.

U23s in action...

Prenton Park played host to Premier League International Cup football as Liverpool’s U23s faced Porto in a Group C tie.

The Portuguese side went in front early in the second half but a sublime finish from Brooks Lennon secured a point for Michael Beale’s team.
