Nathaniel Clyne hailed a 'professional performance' from Liverpool after West Bromwich Albion were beaten 2-1 at Anfield on Saturday.

The Reds moved up to second place in the Premier League as they convincingly beat Tony Pulis' team with Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho getting on the scoresheet.

A late strike from Gareth McAuley set up the possibility of a nervous finish for the hosts, but they defended admirably across the remainder of the contest to claim a deserved three points.

And Clyne was pleased with what he saw from Jürgen Klopp's side at Anfield, despite a second-half showing that in his view was not as sparkling as the first 45 minutes.

"It was a very professional performance, we knew what we had to do out there to get the three points," he told Liverpoolfc.com.

"We played really well, especially in the first half when we took the game to them and were really bright - they couldn't live with us.

"We're disappointed not to kick on the in the second half but we stuck in there and managed to defend what they threw at us. We're happy with the three points."

LFCTV GO: Clyne discusses West Brom win

It took just 20 minutes for Mane to break West Brom's resistance as he sidefooted home from close range after a quick counter to reward a strong start from the hosts.

Clyne believes that early goal was key for the Reds as it forced their opponents out, creating more space to exploit as a result.

"It's important to get that early goal, it [makes] them push out a bit more which gives us more space. Getting the early goal was crucial," he added.

"It's good that we're creating a lot of chances, we've got a lot of creativity up front. We created a lot of chances and on another day it could have been four or five.

"[We've got] a lot of movement up front, a lot of ability on the ball and off the ball and a lot of chances. It's good to play in a team that's creating chances."

The England full-back also reflected on a start to the season that has seen Klopp's team suffer just one defeat and make good progress in both the Premier League and EFL Cup.

"We're very pleased. It's a great start," Clyne enthused.

"We're second at the moment and we're pushing on. We're doing well but we're taking each game as it comes, really, trying to win the next game and the game and keep going.

"It's all good."
