Divock Origi insists Liverpool are ready to perform with 'big hearts' when they take on a Derby County side looking to conjure up an EFL Cup upset this evening.

The Reds travel to the iPro Stadium in the third round of the tournament, where they’ll go head-to-head with the team who currently occupy 20th place in the Championship standings.

Nevertheless, Origi insists the Rams’ league position counts for nothing tonight and is anticipating a fiercely competitive contest in the East Midlands.

The striker told Liverpoolfc.com: "For us, it’s a tough game and in a cup everything can happen. You have to be strong physically, go into it with the mind of a fighter and play our football. That will be our aim.

"We have to go into it with a lot of positive energy and try to outmatch them in every way, that means also in the physical part – I think that is very important. In games like this, things can happen fast. We will try to do everything to get the win.

"We want to win this game and be competitive in all competitions."

Liverpool saw off another Championship side in the previous round of the EFL Cup, running out 5-0 winners over Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium last month.

However, Origi’s 15 months in England so far have taught him that nothing can be taken for granted against teams in lower divisions.

"That’s the special thing about England – you never have an easy game," said the 21-year-old. "You could see even against Burton, they had a lot of quality and this will be the same.

"We have to go there with big hearts and be willing to fight, but I’m sure if we do this we can win, for sure."

Liverpool will head to the iPro on the back of a fine 2-1 triumph over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.

That result was the latest in an impressive start to 2016-17 from Jürgen Klopp’s side and Origi feels it will be crucial to maintain the momentum that's been accumulated in recent weeks tonight.

He said: "We’re all very happy. We all had one objective on Friday night and that was to win at Stamford Bridge. It wasn’t easy, but the way we did it made us proud.

"We worked a lot during last season and this season too – but we have to continue working and keep performing like this.

"We want to stay in a positive run and continue our good football. In football, of course anything can happen, but we’ll do everything to continue our form. It’s also important for confidence to win."

On a personal note, Origi is hoping to be given the nod to help lead Liverpool’s attacking line from the start against Derby and add to a record of four goals in five League Cup appearances for the club.

"I try to use every single moment to improve and show that I can start in the line-up,” said the No.27. "I am convinced I can do this but the choice is up to the manager.

"I just have to show my goodwill, I try to bring a lot of positive energy and bring something to the team when they need me.

"I’ve been successful in the previous games in this tournament – let’s hope it continues like this!"
