A ‘brilliant’ week of training meant Jordan Henderson could sense Liverpool were ready to produce tonight’s outstanding performance at Chelsea.

The Reds ran out 2-1 winners at Stamford Bridge thanks to first-half strikes from Dejan Lovren and Henderson, who posted an early contender for goal of the season with a stunning long-range effort that arced over Thibaut Courtois and into the top corner.

Diego Costa pulled one back for the hosts shortly after the hour mark, but Liverpool held firm in the face of increasing pressure to end Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the season and earn a well-deserved three points.

Friday’s win comes just six days after Jürgen Klopp’s side beat champions Leicester City 4-1 at Anfield, and captain Henderson is thrilled with their week’s work.

“It’s a big victory, it keeps our momentum going,” the No.14 told Sky Sports.

“We’ve been brilliant the last few weeks and in training we’ve been brilliant all week, so I had a good feeling going into the game [and] we produced.

“It was difficult, we knew it would be because Chelsea are a very good side with very good players. You’ve got to defend well and I thought we defended excellently throughout the game and deserved the three points.”

Asked what another impressive performance and victory does for the atmosphere within the dressing room, Henderson responded: “It gives us confidence. [We need to] Keep doing what we’re doing.

“We’ve been training really well, following what the manager and his staff want us to do all week and executing it at a weekend like we did today. If we keep listening to what the manager says, keep working and keep performing like that, then we’ll see where we are at the end of the season.”

On the subject of his goal, the skipper was typically modest.

“I took a good touch out of my feet then just tried to bend it in the far corner and thankfully it went in. He’s a world-class keeper but it’s about time I got a goal!” he said.
