James Milner's first game as England captain ended in a narrow defeat to the Netherlands, though he and three of his Liverpool teammates came through Tuesday evening's fixture at Wembley Stadium unscathed.

Milner was joined in the starting XI by Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana, and all three played a prominent role in a fine team move that resulted in Jamie Vardy opening the scoring.

However, the game was turned on its head in a second half that saw the aforementioned trio withdrawn and Nathaniel Clyne appear as a substitute, with the Dutch running out 2-1 winners on the night.

Elsewhere in Europe, there was joy for Reds defender Mamadou Sakho as he played the entirety of a 4-2 win for France over Russia at the Stade de France.

His fellow centre-back Martin Skrtel also picked up a much-needed 90 minutes, featuring from the off for Slovakia as they held the Republic of Ireland to a 2-2 draw in Dublin.

Meanwhile, Emre Can picked up the fifth cap of his senior international career, emerging from the bench with 20 minutes to play as Germany thrashed Italy 4-1.
