Danny Ward is hoping an international debut could be the start of something good for both club and country.

The goalkeeper is set to make his first appearance for the Welsh national side tonight in a friendly against Northern Ireland at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The 22-year-old hopes to impress boss Chris Coleman ahead of the European Championships this summer.

And while Ward currently has his sights on the international stage, he is also looking to compete with Simon Mignolet for the starting job at Anfield.

He said: "I am working towards something special with Wales. There is a major tournament I want to be involved in at the end of the season and if I get my chance I have to make the most of it.

"You cannot take it for granted, because until you are on that pitch it is not done and you are not a capped international. But to get your first senior cap would be a proud moment for me and my family.

"My ambition on the club front is to be Liverpool's No.1 and I will keep trying to do that as long as they want me at the club.

"Hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later. Competition is healthy, I am at a great club and I want to make an impact there."

The 'keeper spent the first half of this season on loan at Aberdeen and played a pivotal role in helping the Dons battle Celtic for top spot in the Scottish Premiership before being recalled in January.

Ward believes the experience he gained during his time at Pittodrie will prove to be beneficial in the future.

"I really enjoyed myself up there and if they win it I get an SPL winner's medal - and that would not be too bad to take home," he added.

"The loan spell was something Liverpool and myself felt was needed as I had not played much first-team football coming into this season.

"I feel I am nearer that No.1 spot now. [Playing] gives you the experience of pressure situations that you cannot get in training.

"You mature in good games and hopefully it will stand me in good stead. Winning my first cap will help in that regard too. But I do not want to settle for one, I want to get as many as I possibly can."
