The noise inside Anfield was a constant motivation to Jordan Henderson and his Liverpool teammates as they powered to a 2-0 Europa League victory over Manchester United.

A new chapter was written in one of world football’s fiercest rivalries on Thursday night as the two English sides crossed swords in a continental competition for the first time.

It was the Reds who rose to the occasion as the Kop roared them on – securing a two-goal advantage in the first leg that was the minimum their relentless performance deserved.

Daniel Sturridge scored the opener from a penalty and David de Gea thwarted Jürgen Klopp’s team repeatedly until Roberto Firmino found the target in the 73rd minute.

The manager specifically thanked the fans for their contribution from the stands, and Henderson also explained just how much of an effect it had on proceedings.

“It was a brilliant atmosphere from start to finish and I think that gave us a real lift throughout the game,” said the captain after the final whistle.

“I thought we were very good – we started the game well and finished it off well. So that’s very pleasing. I always felt confident we could get another one.

“De Gea made some good saves but we kept going. We were very solid and created a lot of chances, so overall it was a good performance.”

With no match this weekend, Liverpool can set their focus on the second leg at Old Trafford next Thursday, when a place in the quarter-finals will be decided.

Henderson has been encouraged by the team’s recent form but warned that there is plenty of work still to be done if the Reds are to reach the Europa League last eight.

He added: “The away leg will be very difficult. 2-0 can be dangerous at times – by no means is it over and we’ve got to make sure we’re focused and do the job properly in the away leg.

“In the last few weeks we have been consistent and improving all the time, and building on performances and getting results – which is very important.

“Hopefully we can keep doing that from now until the end of the season.”
