Jürgen Klopp took the opportunity to express his gratitude to Liverpool supporters for the atmosphere they generated throughout the 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Thursday evening.

The stadium was a cauldron of noise even before kick-off in the Europa League last 16, first-leg tie – and indeed ratcheted up several decibels once the game was underway.

Goals in each half from Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino only served to increase the sound levels as the Reds secured a healthy lead to take to Old Trafford in one week’s time.

Afterwards, Klopp was eager to show his appreciation to Liverpool supporters for playing their part in the win.

He told his post-match press conference: “The atmosphere tonight was unbelievable. It was really great and I want to say thank you to everybody that was involved in this atmosphere.

“It was easy to enjoy from the first until the last second. That was Liverpool how I knew it before I came here, so that was really, really great.

“Thank you for this.”
