Jon Flanagan considers his mental toughness and the support of Liverpool fans as two of the key factors in his return from such a long spell on the sidelines.

Injury denied the full-back the opportunity to build on his impressive performances during the 2013-14 season and it would be almost two years before he played for the Reds again.

That cathartic moment arrived a month ago, when the Scouser came on as a substitute against Exeter City at Anfield – and received an unforgettable welcome from the home crowd.

The thought of playing in front of Kopites again helped Flanagan throughout his lengthy rehabilitation period, as did the strength of his belief in making a comeback.

“It has been difficult and tough mentally, but I am mentally strong – I think that’s what has got me through it,” said the 23-year-old.

“I always knew since I had the injury, I’d come out of it and get better and stronger.

“Knowing the fans are all there cheering you on gives you a massive lift, to know the fans are there supporting you and wanting you to do well.”

Flanagan subsequently featured for 105 and 120 minutes of the cup ties with Stoke City and West Ham United respectively, immediately earning praise from Jürgen Klopp.

The defender said: “He’s brilliant, he’s full-throttle. He’s a genuine guy and his training is great each day.

“He has got a great sense of humour, as have the two [assistants, Zeljko Buvac and Peter Krawietz] he has brought with him. It’s great for all of us to have a laugh but when it’s serious, it’s serious.”
