Jürgen Klopp today confirmed Divock Origi has undergone surgery on a knee problem, but insisted the striker remains on course to return to action in the original timescale anticipated when he sustained a hamstring injury last month.

The Reds took the decision to allow the 20-year-old to have a small operation to clear up a minor issue in his knee in Belgium this week.

Origi is now back at Melwood and continuing his rehabilitation from the hamstring strain sustained against Leicester City on Boxing Day.

Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “It wasn’t really surgery, it was a clean-up of his knee. It was a little thing to do and we thought it was a good moment to do it – not the best of course, but because of his other injury we took the time.

“Now he is back and everything is okay. He is on time and hopefully we can use him in a few weeks.”

Origi will, of course, be absent from Liverpool’s squad for Wednesday’s Anfield clash with Arsenal.

However, Klopp’s options have been significantly bolstered by the return to training of several key players ahead of the Gunners’ visit.

The boss continued: “The rest are looking better, fitness-wise. All of the other guys trained.

“Divock couldn’t train, but we had Mama in training and he looked good. We had Millie [Milner] in training and he looked good. Hendo in training, very good.

“Our options are now more than they were a few days ago. Hopefully we can build a good squad [for Arsenal].”
