Jordan Henderson hopes he is 'not too far away' from making a return for Liverpool after more than three months out injured.

The captain has been on the sidelines since the middle of August and has therefore yet to feature for Jürgen Klopp following the German's appointment last month.

But Henderson was back out in preliminary training at Melwood last week, with the manager revealing the No.14 could join in with his teammates in the days to come.

And the midfielder himself delivered a further positive update on his fitness after the Reds thrashed Manchester City 4-1 away from home on Saturday.

“I’m getting there,” Henderson told Sky Sports.

“This is one of the longest periods of time I’ve been out for and that has been tough for me. Hopefully I’m not too far away now.”

On the triumph at the Etihad Stadium, he added: “I thought the lads were outstanding from start to finish. Hopefully that can set a standard for us for the rest of the season.

“That shows how well we can play and we just need the consistency and to keep playing with the freedom that we did on Saturday.

“The manager has made a big impact and he’s been fantastic for Liverpool and for the Premier League. Hopefully we can keep learning from him and improving.”
