That Liverpool could have scored more than the four they did in dismantling Manchester City on Saturday just summed up their sensational performance, reflected James Milner.

Jürgen Klopp’s team were near unstoppable in winning 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

They took an early lead when Eliaquim Mangala put the ball into his own net and compounded their advantage as Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino took turns apiece to set up the other to score.

Sergio Aguero struck back for City before the break but Klopp’s charges weathered the storm and sealed the result and the points through Martin Skrtel’s volley in the final stages.

Milner told Sky Sports: “They are a top team and they have shown that year on year, and at the start of this season as well, so for us to come here and get the result was brilliant.

“I thought we were top-class in the first half; in the second half, we probably didn’t play as well but still defended well and created a few more chances.

“We had chances to get a few more but [Joe] Hart made a couple of good saves, and they had some chances as well but Simon [Mignolet] did well and we defended brilliantly.

“I thought it was a really good performance and pleasing the amount of chances we scored – and when you are disappointed that you could have had more, then that is a pleasing thing.”

Liverpool have now already visited Arsenal, Manchester United, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and City this season – losing just one of those six clashes with a rival.

Asked what this win would do for the Reds, Milner added: “It hopefully gives us that confidence that we can beat these teams.

“We had a good result at Chelsea as well and I think our away form has been pretty good if you look at the teams we have played.

“We have played all of the top teams and done pretty well but it’s the home form we can improve on.

“As long as we know where we need to improve, that’s the pleasing thing and hopefully we can kick on and take a lot of spirit from this. There are a lot of games coming up so it’s a good start to this period.”
