James Milner believes Liverpool's 0-0 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday represents a 'solid start' to life under Jürgen Klopp.

The Reds travelled to White Hart Lane for the German's first game in charge and earned a point against Mauricio Pochettino's side thanks to a gritty showing in the capital.

Milner, who again started as captain in the absence of Jordan Henderson, was pleased with the way his teammates performed as they kicked off a new era.

When asked to evaluate the game, the midfielder told BT Sport: "First half we started really well, especially the first 25 minutes or so.

"On another day we could have won it.

"We acquitted ourselves well. It’s a new manager coming in with new ideas. Overall this is a solid start."

Klopp gets his first taste of Anfield as manager of the home team when Rubin Kazan arrive for Thursday's Europa League group stage clash.

And Milner has promised that performances will improve with each passing game as the squad become more used to the nuances of the new boss's tactics.

"It’s a long, long process - obviously a new manager coming in, plenty of changes," he continued.

"The longer we’re together the better we’ll get.

"He’s tried to change a few things but obviously you can’t change too much too soon."
