Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool are in good hands following the appointment of Jürgen Klopp.

The former Reds defender insists an aura of excitement has enveloped Anfield since the German was confirmed as manager of the club on Thursday night.

And Carragher is hopeful that Klopp can bring the good times back.

“I think he will be great for Liverpool,” Carragher told LFCTV.

“Everyone is quite excited at the moment. He hasn’t had a game yet, so if we win a few, God knows what everyone is going to be like then!

“Liverpool have got an A-class manager after what he achieved in the Bundesliga.

“He’s certainly a coach that, if Manchester United were looking for a new manager or Real Madrid and Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City, then he would come into the reckoning with all of those clubs.”

As a supporter, Carragher insists Klopp was always his first choice as the successor to Brendan Rodgers, and he feels the new manager has the charisma and respect to attract new talent to the club in future years.

He added: “He’s got a charisma about him, he’s got a personality.

“I think everyone in world football thought that when we were watching him with Dortmund in interviews before the Champions League final. You thought he was the type of fella you would play for.

“You are hoping that with his personality and also with his track record he can attract players to the club.

“Hopefully he will have contacts in Germany where they produce fantastic footballers and world champions, maybe some of the players he had when was at Dortmund.

“I think that’s part of management now, what players you can attract to the club.”

As for expectations for the rest of the season, Carragher insists Klopp will be desperate to try and bring Champions League football back to Anfield.

He added: “We need to start well. With him coming in at this time now the league is still very open, especially in terms of the start Chelsea have made.

“I think Chelsea are in a fight for the top-four now, whereas before the start of the season they were maybe a guarantee to win the league or certainly being in the top-four position.

“I think the big aim for Liverpool this season is to try and be in the Champions League.

“We are in three cup competitions at this moment so hopefully we can get one of them, but if he could do either a trophy or top-four I think it would be a great start to his Liverpool career.”
