Jordan Rossiter acknowledged Liverpool were guilty of profligacy in front of the net during Thursday night's 1-1 draw with FC Sion at Anfield – but retains confidence the goals will soon start to flow.

The Reds began the night in perfect fashion, capitalising on their early pressure by taking the lead with a neat Adam Lallana effort in just the fourth minute.

With traffic all one way, it appeared as though Liverpool were well on course to collect their first three points of the Europa League campaign – until Ebenezer Assifuah nipped in behind the home defence to draw the Swiss side level with 17 minutes played.

The hosts toiled in search of a second goal over the course of the remainder of the game, with Lallana and Divock Origi in particular going close only to be thwarted by the saves of Andris Vanins, meaning it was not to be as Sion held out to clinch a point and top spot in Group B after two matches.

Afterwards, Rossiter told Liverpoolfc.com: “I thought the boys played well. We got into the final third well, but we lacked that cutting edge, which I’m sure all the boys agree on – but that will start to come with games.

“It’s the top level and if you make a mistake, or tactically you miss something, then the opposition will get in.

"Everything was going well [at the start]. We were playing good football, but it was a sloppy goal for us to concede.

“We’ll have a debrief on that, put it behind us and look forward to Sunday.”

On a personal note for Rossiter, the 18-year-old notched his second start of the season so far after being handed a central midfield berth by Brendan Rodgers.

“I’m loving every minute of it,” he enthused. “I played in the Bordeaux game and I played again [against Sion].

“It’s only going to help me in the future, and I’m going to keep on trying to put good performances in.”

Thoughts will now turn to Sunday and the Merseyside derby clash with Everton at Goodison Park.

Born and bred in the city, Rossiter knows all about the passion of the occasion and the impact the eventual outcome can have on supporters – and he’d love nothing more than to play some part against Roberto Martinez’s side.

He said: “I’d love to be involved. Being a Scouse lad, I know how much it means to the city and the fans, but all the other lads do too and we just can’t wait for it.

“It’s going to be a massive game and we’re all looking forward to it. We’ve had a good record there [at Goodison] in the derbies over the last few years and hopefully we can carry that on.”
