Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Mamadou Sakho will make his first appearance of the season when Liverpool take on Bordeaux in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The France defender has yet to feature for the Reds this season but will play from the start in his home country as their Group B campaign gets underway.

“Mama is a player that we want to keep,” the manager said at his pre-match press conference.

“It was obviously a difficult start for him, like it was for all the players; in the first five games, the team won the first few games so it was difficult to change the team. Mama was working towards improving his fitness level.

“But always after the international break we were going to need Mama and the other players. He’s a very important member of our squad and we want to extend his contract with the club.

“For sure, Mama will play tomorrow night.”

Divock Origi made his competitive debut for the club as a substitute against Manchester United last weekend and is also now in contention to face Bordeaux.

“Divock is a young player who is settling into the club well,” Rodgers added. “He’ll feature tomorrow evening also.

“He’s a very talented young boy who will just take time, but he has got great attributes and I’m sure over the coming years at Liverpool he’ll demonstrate those.”
