Toni Gomes and Madger Gomes were both on the mark as Liverpool U23s beat Runcorn Linnets 2-0 in a friendly encounter at the Kirkby Academy on Tuesday night.

Played in a heavy downpour, Michael Beale took the opportunity to give some of his squad vital minutes as the likes of Andy Firth, Kane Lewis, Nathan Phillips and Jake Brimmer all returned.

Toni Gomes netted the first goal courtesy of a Madger Gomes assist and Spanish youth international Madger then scored the second himself.

Glen McAuley, who has made a habit of finding the net at an impressive rate for the U18s so far, came on as a second-half substitute and had a goal disallowed.

Reflecting on the game, Beale told Liverpoolfc.com: "First of all I would like to thank Runcorn Linnets for agreeing at late notice to playing this fixture after our original opponents TNS had to pull out.

"It was really difficult conditions out there and the lads deserve a lot of credit.

"Overall it was a really good workout and it was good to give some of the lads who haven't featured recently some minutes."

Liverpool U23s: Firth, Whelan (Dhanda 45), Maguire, N Phillips, Brewitt, K Lewis, Brimmer (Williams 60), M Gomes, T Gomes (McAuley 75), Brannagan, Alves (Juanma 60).
