The Reds captain broke the deadlock to set his country on course for a 3-0 victory over Senegal in their last-16 meeting in Qatar.

Arriving into the opposition box to meet a cutback, Henderson guided a low, left-footed finish into the far corner six minutes before the break.

Harry Kane doubled England’s advantage on the stroke of half-time and that lead was extended by Bukayo Saka early in the second period.

“It was a special feeling [to score], first time in a World Cup so it was always going to be special,” Henderson, who was withdrawn 10 minutes from the end, said post-match.

He, Trent Alexander-Arnold and the Three Lions progress to a last-eight showdown with holders France and Ibrahima Konate.

Les Bleus maintained their defence of the trophy by beating Poland 3-1 in the afternoon kick-off.

Goals from Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe (two) meant Robert Lewandowski’s late penalty was mere consolation at Al Thumama Stadium, where Konate was an unused substitute.

The clash between England and France is scheduled for 7pm GMT on Saturday.
