The sides were paired together in round four of this season’s competition on Wednesday, after the Reds advanced by beating Southampton 2-1 the previous night.

They first clashed with the Eagles in the cup in December 1992 and it was Palace who prevailed in a replay at Selhurst Park.

Mike Marsh scored a penalty for Liverpool in a 1-1 draw at Anfield and did so again in the return match a fortnight later, though the hosts won 2-1 after extra-time.

A little over two years later, the clubs faced off in the League Cup again and this time the prize on offer was a trip to Wembley.

Robbie Fowler’s last-minute spot-kick in the first leg at Anfield gave Roy Evans’ charges a slender advantage and Fowler was on the scoresheet again in London to wrap up a 2-0 aggregate win.

The Reds would go on to lift the trophy with a 2-1 success against Bolton Wanderers.

There was some déjà vu in January 2001.

Liverpool and Palace were drawn together in the last four again, though on this occasion the latter gained a lead at the halfway point of the tie, winning 2-1 at home.

But the Reds, now under Gerard Houllier, racked up a 5-0 victory back at Anfield two weeks later courtesy of strikes from Vladimir Smicer, Danny Murphy (two), Igor Biscan and Fowler.

And a semi-final defeat of Palace proved a good omen once more as Houllier’s squad then saw off Birmingham City in the final too.

Their last meeting in the League Cup was 20 years ago next month.

It was a third-round fixture in October 2005 at Selhurst Park and the Eagles were the victors, goals from Dougie Freedman and Marco Reich sandwiching a Steven Gerrard reply.
