Igor Biscan overcame some challenging moments to leave Liverpool having played a big part in the club's fifth European Cup triumph.

Predominantly a midfielder, the Croatian could also be used at centre-back and joined the Reds from Dinamo Zagreb midway through the historic 2000-01 season.

He went on to make 21 appearances in the remainder of the campaign - including four each in the FA Cup and League Cup - as Gerard Houllier's men lifted three trophies and secured Champions League qualification.

Biscan struggled to adapt to the demands of English football, though, and was used sparingly by Houllier over the course of the next two years.

He came back into favour during 2003-04, starting 35 times across a campaign that would prove to be Houllier's last at the helm, with the Frenchman replaced by Rafael Benitez at the end of the season.

Biscan steadily gained the trust of Benitez as 2004-05 unfolded and he was named in the starting XI for all six knockout games in the Champions League as Liverpool embarked on a shock run to the final.

He was an unused substitute for the dramatic showpiece against AC Milan in Istanbul but was able to bow out as a European champion with the club before linking up with Panathinaikos that summer.
