NewsComing soon: 'Captains' with Gerrard, Souness and Van Dijk - a new LFC Original film

The trio of Reds icons gathered at Anfield for an in-depth discussion about the privilege of representing and skippering the club.

Souness, a natural leader from the minute he arrived from Middlesbrough in 1978, wore the armband from early 1982 until his departure in 1984, with his last act leading Joe Fagan's side to a famous win in a European Cup final in Rome.

Gerrard, in 2005, became the fourth of five Liverpool captains to get his hands on club football's biggest prize, as part of a legendary 12-year stint in the position.

The incumbent is Van Dijk, who succeeded Jordan Henderson in the role in 2023 and has lifted two major honours as captain to date, the most recent being the Premier League title in 2024-25.

"How many people can say they've captained Liverpool Football Club?" Souness asks in the film. "The three of us can count ourselves very lucky."

Van Dijk adds: "It all starts, I think, with, 'Do you understand the club in terms of what is required to be a Liverpool player?'"

Addressing the man in situ, Gerrard says: "The best days ever. I'd swap with you right now!"

Captains will be available to watch for All Red Full and Video members on Tuesday August 18.
