HonoursFootball League Super Cup

1986

Liverpool were winners of the single edition of the Football League Super Cup.

The competition was created following the tragedy at Heysel Stadium in May 1985 and the ensuing ban from European football imposed on English clubs.

Those six teams who had been set to participate in Europe in 1985-86 were invited to contest the Super Cup in lieu of continental fixtures.

Liverpool advanced from the group stage with three wins and a draw from home and away meetings against Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds faced Norwich City in the semi-finals and after a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road, they trailed 1-0 halfway through the return clash on home soil.

But second-half goals from Kevin MacDonald, Jan Molby and Craig Johnston sent Kenny Dalglish’s team through to an all-Merseyside final versus Everton, also to be played over two legs.

The deciding games would not actually take place until early in the following campaign, in September 1986.

Liverpool ran out comfortable victors in the belated showpiece, Ian Rush providing five of their goals as they won 3-1 at Anfield and then 4-1 at Goodison Park to claim the trophy.

With the tournament failing to draw significant interest, however, it proved to be a one-off.
