NewsWorld Cup: Florian Wirtz assists but Germany exit to Paraguay on penalties
By Joe Urquhart
Liverpool’s No.7 featured for 110 minutes in Boston with the two teams playing out a 1-1 draw after both normal and extra-time.
Paraguay were the nation to break the initial deadlock in the contest via Julio Enciso’s header shortly ahead of the half-time break.
However, the tie was levelled in the 54th minute with the help of Wirtz as his flighted delivery deep into the area saw Kai Havertz respond with a header of his own.
In extra-time, Jonathan Tah saw a goal at a corner ball ruled out by VAR for Germany, meaning penalties were needed to find a winner.
It was then Paraguay who claimed victory in the decisive shootout, securing a back-and-forth 4-3 win from the spot to secure a place in the Round of 16.
