Andy Robertson and Liverpool took great delight in putting smiles on the faces of supporters with the 7-0 victory over Manchester United.

Jürgen Klopp's side delivered the club's biggest ever win over their fierce rivals on Sunday to maintain a strong push for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Robertson helped kickstart the scoring on a memorable afternoon with a brilliant assist for Cody Gakpo's opener late in the first half.

Gakpo scored again after half-time as Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah also netted doubles – the latter becoming Liverpool's all-time leading Premier League goalscorer – before Roberto Firmino wrapped things up.

Robertson spoke to Liverpoolfc.com after the confidence-boosting result to dissect the team's sensational display, Salah's feat and the challenges ahead.

Extended highlights: Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd

There must be very few performances in your career that you can actually enjoy – it looked like the players were enjoying every touch...

The season we've had, the fans have stuck with us and the fans have still sold out every away end, every home game at Anfield. They were enjoying it, and that's what we like to see. We want the people that come here to enjoy it – and this season they probably haven't as much. That's down to us. I'm sure [Sunday] will be right up there with people's best games of going to and our best games of playing. Everything just clicked for us, we had chances, we were pressing well, we kept the ball and you can see everyone enjoying it, especially the last 10, 15 minutes and it's easy to enjoy it when you're 5-0, 6-0 up, of course.

But you have to enjoy these moments. We play football, we work hard every week for moments like this. In the Premier League, you don't often get games like this – it's usually really tight and you have to push the whole way. We kept pushing but just with a wee bit of a spring in our step. But we have to keep going. We've got a massive game on Saturday and you have to back it up. It's pointless getting these results and not being able to back it up.

Just on the front three that's changed – Gakpo playing in that No.9 position that's so difficult to play and then you've got a record-breaker like Mo...

Yeah, Cody's best game for Liverpool. Obviously it's been a short Liverpool career so far but I thought he was outstanding. His confidence for both goals was outstanding. And then the record-breaker, I don't know how many records he's broken, but I know that one means a lot to him. Obviously Robbie Fowler was a fantastic player for this club, a legend in his own right, and for Mo to beat him he'll go down as one of the greats for this club, for the Premier League.

But for this club he'll go down as one of the all-time greats, and he deserves everything he got. He got a massive cheer in the changing room when he came in. He's a fantastic player, a fantastic person and he'll be hungry for more. We're hungry for more. It's been a good weekend for us in terms of results and what we've done, but we need to keep going.

Is this a signal of your intent for a top-four finish?

Obviously playing on the Sunday, you sit back and watch all the other results. We knew Newcastle would have a tough game at Man City, and Tottenham dropping points at Wolves, but we know in this league anyone can beat anyone. When they're the two that you're really chasing for the spots, it's important you capitalise when both of them drop points. That was one of the motivations [for Sunday]. We don't need much motivation to play against Man United but that was an extra motivation. The table will look a lot healthier but it's still not what we want to see. We need to keep pushing, we need a strong finish to the end of the season and we're making good steps to doing that. But we have to carry this momentum forward and hopefully we can get top four.
