Whenever the question of Liverpool's all-time greatest performance is posed, there is one game that will always remain a contender.

And within the club's museum archive, the commemorative silver platter pictured below serves as a permanent reminder.

In April 1988 the Reds were closing in on league title No.17. They had long been the runaway leaders of the old First Division but the visit to Anfield of Nottingham Forest was expected to be one of their sternest tests of the campaign.

Earlier in the month, the champions-elect had suffered a rare defeat at the City Ground, while just days before this return fixture the two sides had battled out a closely fought FA Cup semi-final that Liverpool narrowly edged.

Although the halcyon days of being back-to-back European champions were long gone, Forest boss Brian Clough had rebuilt his team and there was renewed optimism on the banks of the Trent.

At the same time, Kenny Dalglish had assembled a squad that, even by Liverpool's previous high standards, was proving to be something special. Inspired by the attacking prowess of summer signings John Barnes and Peter Beardsley, they had blazed a trail across the country that left supporters drooling.

But the best was yet to come. On a night that will never be forgotten by those present, Liverpool's free-flowing football was a joy to watch, and they coasted to a 5-0 victory, their most emphatic of the campaign.

The legendary Tom Finney described it as the finest exhibition of football he had ever seen and compared Liverpool's class of 1987-88 to the great World Cup-winning Brazil team of 1970.

As well as three more points on their way to the title, it was also enough to earn the Reds this silver platter for what was not surprisingly judged to be the 'Barclays League Performance of the Week'.
