WatchNeil Mellor reviews 7-0 United win: 'Cody Gakpo was outstanding'

In his regular Review Show, which is now available to watch on LFCTV GO, the former Red pinpointed several key factors behind a victory that will live long in the memory.

“It’s one of those games we’ll look back on in years to come and think that was a real special memory,” said Mellor.

“Cody Gakpo was outstanding and he also contested and won the most duels all over the pitch.

“For the first goal, he makes a really good run which takes Fred away from that central position in the midfield and that’s what allowed Andy Robertson to drive into that position and play that brilliant pass.

“The decision-making from Gakpo is brilliant, a little drop of the shoulder and then he gets into the position to bend the ball into the far corner.

“The third goal starts with Jordan Henderson, who is so calm around the edge of his own box and starts the counter-attack.

“Gakpo is in his own half when he plays that pass to Mo Salah and he just sprints... his desire, his determination, the pass is brilliant and the finish is just exquisite, absolutely brilliant!”

It was also a special day for Mohamed Salah, who became Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League – overtaking Robbie Fowler.

Mellor added: “Mo was absolutely magnificent providing goals and assists, his hold-up play, his tracking back.

“It’s quite unbelievable numbers for Salah to have beaten Fowler and Gerrard – who were both in attendance on Sunday – and hopefully there’s plenty more to come.”
